Cooling system for a Pentium D 830 - need help

#1 Post by sb102 » Tue Aug 04, 2009 1:23 pm

Hello all,

I recently decided to upgrade my old PC. So I changed my graphic card from a Radeon 9550 AGP to a Radeon 2600 PCIe (my motherboard is capable of supporting both AGP and PCIe) and 1 GB DDR to 2 GB DDR2 (again, the mobo supports both standards). But now I noticed that the Celeron 2,66 GHz @ 3,3 GHz processor became the system's bottleneck. So I bought a bulk Pentium D 830 (3 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, dual core) at a shop that specialises in selling old, refurbished computers (I bought from them lots of equipment, including almost all of my ThinkPads). After buying it, I did some research - it turned out that this little chip produces INSANE amounts of heat during work (if Intel's box cooling for the 830 is used, the temperature can get as high as over 60 degrees Celcius when in stress). So obviously I cannot use the box cooling from my Celeron. Instead I want to have something better to cool it down. I ordered the Arctic Silver 5 thermal grease and started looking for a decent cooling system. And here is where I need help - I have found two similar constructions (both have the same weight - just over 500 grams, the same size of the fan, have heatpipes and cost about 30 $ each):

http://www.revoltec.net/revoltec.net/in ... iteLang=en - Revoltec Pipe tower LGA-T1

http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalog/p ... _42&mID=72 - Arctic cooling Freezer 7 pro

Which one of them will be better to use on the Pentium D830 ??

I have asked some guys about this on an overclocking forum and instead of giving me an answer they started picking me a new PC configuration (I don't want to waste money on some rubbish - I want to buy a T60/61 ThinkPad instead :D ).

I would be glad if someone could help me with this problem.

Thanks in advance.

I am a big fan of Arctic Cooling equipment. No unnecessary fancy-ness, they work well, and are well priced. They are #1 on my shopping list when looking for heatsinks or case fans. They aren't the absolute leader when it comes to cooling, so if you are a serious overclocker look elsewhere. But for running processors at their rated speed there is little to fault with them - and they are pretty quiet too.

The only other thing I can add is that of the two you have selected, I'd prefer the Arctic Cooling for the fan size. If the fan bearings start to die, replacement 92mm computer fans are a dime a dozen - good luck finding a 100mm fan though.

Hi rek,

Thanks for your reply. I think I will go for the Arctic Cooling then. I don't think that I will have the guts for overclocking this chip - about 400 MHz more next to a big increase of the processor's temperature isn't worth it.

Thanks again
