Ethernet HELP!!!
Ethernet HELP!!!
Someone put me out of my misery! I feel like I should tear up my NET+ certificate.
My SIL installed a VPN client on my daughter's backup Toshiba 6100 which he wound up uninstalling after they had some "problems" with it.
Now, regardless of how I attempt to connect to any of their or my routers (CAT5 or WiFi) with it I can't get a valid IP address because [censored] XP has "locked" TCP/IP in APIPA (alternate private address)!
I know there's a way to edit this in the registry, but I'm at a loss as to precisely where and how.
I'm sure I'm suffering a senior moment here, but somebody throw me a bone!!!
Regards,
James

APIPA is 169.254.x.x. That normally says that the NIC (or TCP/IP) can't see a DHCP server, so cannot get an address. I would try the following (not in any particular order):
1. Make sure TCP/IP is truly configured for DHCP.
2. ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew
3. Try deleting the NIC and letting Windows re-install it (may need the proper drivers).
4. Try repairing TCP/IP. (I have read about this, but never had to do it).
5. Try running SP2 again - it rewrites so many things, it may clear up the problem.
6. Make sure the VPN client is truly uninstalled. Must be a very bad VPN client.
7. Look in HKLM -> System -> CurrentControlSet -> Control -> Network. Look at (normally) the first key and explode it. There should be one subkey for every valid NIC. Delete any others and restart.
8. Put APIPA into the Microsoft Knowledge Base. There are a ton of hits, and something there may twig your memory.
When I get this symptom, I make sure I have a known good wired connection (not wireless) and then usually release/renew does it.
One other thought (although I do not think it to be related) - try rebooting your router.

Thanks for the try JD.
I've tried them all, still stuck with the AP address.
I even hit the registry with a sledge hammer (figuratively) and deleted all references to TCP/IP and rebooted and reinstalled everything, the [censored] AP was still configured.
Guess I'll be running through the MSKB tomorrow.
BTW, this machine is still running SP1.

James - did you get the problem fixed? In another forum, there was a thread that some spyware can damage the network stack (which is why a TCP/IP repair will sometimes work). But also there is a winsock fix:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
You might try that if all else has failed. I have seen this fix before but never used it myself, so I can't comment on its value.

OMG it works (kinda)
had a xp pro machine on my network that would not connect to the internet with network wired lan or with dialup. I was able to release but not renew ipaddress. I checked everything but could not connect. could not ping anything no avg updates etc. went to microsoft and tried to check registry values and could not find them for DhCP. I ran that tool above and rebooted and network magic found the router, and set it up , I am able to do windows updates, avg updates, antispyware updates internet works but the web pages look weird. as if not all the packets are arriving. no color. I had gone into internet options and set security, etc back to defaults is there anywhere eles I can set to defaults to try to get the pages to load fully????? for example the msn home page is white and is a series of blocks on a white background. ebay does not load all the headers, google only loads it's name and the search bar and the personalize this page. just looks incomplete. ANy suggestions?? And also thank you for that tip. I had been through web searches, microsoft knowledge base, other forums , hated to bug the think pad big brains with a non think pad issue, but as usual someone here has the answer. thank you so very much!!!!

Once the interface is there, as long as the driver is correct, all the left should be the network.
If on the same LAN other dhcp clients can get TCP/IP info without problems, then it's the settings on the client, not the server/router, that we need to look at.(nothing new here...just standard procedure I guess)
I wonder if
1. port 67/68 was blocked by firewall?
2. is there any encryption service automatically enabled so that all the outgoing packages are encryped by default?
I am just guessing since I haven't seen any keywords like firewall has been mentioned. However maybe you've already tried.
PS. Since the system still assigns itself an MS private IP address. I assume the DHCP client service is working properly.

weird fonts and no colors in background
I was able to browse but the fonts were blue qand slightly weird and there was no background colors I looked everywere and could not find any settings, I downloaded IE7 and installed and it helped to complete the packet transfer issue and now it seems like all the packets are getting through but the colors are still wrong. I have defaulted everythign i could find and its just not the full experience I found and deleted the dragonit.INf trojan and downloader rameh with AVG anti spyware and they seem to be gone for now but thet might have crippled the whole mess.????

Try emptying your browser cache/temp. internet files, it may be so stuffed, that it won't let anymore in.
