Many craters remain in the fields where bombers dumped their load (so to speak) to gain height and speed to try to escape the pursuing fighters. Whole towns and cities have been physically altered. Anyone visited Coventry, Portsmouth, Le Havre, Stuttgart to name but a few? If so, you'll know what I mean.
I was recently looking at a page of a girl in Ukraine who got a metal detector as a present. She documented in detail how she went to several famous battle sites around Kiev and recovered several dozens of various items from Nazi SS insignia badges to actual weapons and helmets. Not to mention some human remains. There is even a picture of all this stuff after cleaning and it takes a better part of a wall in her apartment. Unfortunately, I can't locate this page any longer. If I find it I'll post a link.

In this thread the enigma machine has been mentioned several times. An 88 year-old's posting on our local BBC website add a few of his personal memories. Some of you will understand his reluctance to have imparted this information before due to the UK Official Secrets Act. It is only now that sufficient time has passed that these sorts of details are emerging. So, RBS, (and I mean this in a very friendly way) hopefully this answers one of your questions about the time delay.
