Vista Upgrade Disk Question

#1 Post by emtee3511 » Fri Oct 02, 2009 4:18 pm

I purchased a Vista Upgrade Disk recently, planning to use it on a Gateway laptop I have that runs Windows XP-P -- When I received the disk, it was not the retail veresion I had mistakenly expected, so I have a question or two before I decide how (or if) I can use this particular disk. If I can't upgrade my Gateway Xp-P, that's no problem -- don't really "need" Vista -- :) I just wanted to play...

So the disk is labled:
Windows Vista Business Express Upgrade
Part Number 42Y7111
For use only as an upgrade to a qualifying Lenovo PC
Disk came with Windows Vista Business COA attached to package

So, #1 -- Is it likely I can use this particular disk to upgrade XP-P on my Gateway Laptop

#2 -- If it is not authorized to use for my Gateway, would it be authorized to use on any of my ThinkPads? I have one or two that have XP-P, and I might have Vista Home on one

#3 -- Is it likely that this disk was for a particular Thinkpad that was authorized for XP-P OR Vista Business, but not both -- I'm thinking that since the COA was sent with the disk, it should be authorized to install if not on my Gateway, then on one of my Thinkpads

The seller is under the impression that as long as you have an 'upgradeable' Windows OS, this disk is good for the upgrade. I haven't asked these questions of the Seller, because I don't plan on returning the disk either way -- didn't spend that much on it, and if I can't use it, it would be because of an honest mistake -- not worth my or seller's shipping expense -- will just consider this part of my ThinkPad education :)

So any info about this type of disk will be appreciated --

Install it and see what happens. Windows usually gives you a 30 day trial. If it's preactivated, then you won't have any issues, but you should buy copies of 7 if you plan on installing it on multiple machines. There's rumors of a family pack for 7. I'm not license guru, but I would think they'd tie to your ThinkPad.
