help me help my parents fix skype

okay my parents in Poland messed up their skype. to be more particular they did the following:
1. they updated skype 3.~ to 4.~
2. it asked them to install directx 10.0
3. directx failed to install
4. skype 4.~ fails to load
they reverted to skype 3.~ but I can no longer call them. oh and they are running windows 2000 which makes things that much more complicated.
any ideas how to fix this?

I assume they have the Skype V3 install file. I would uninstall Skype completely. Restart and see if DirectX is OK. Run dxdiag (dxdiag.exe in Windows\System32) and see that everything runs. If not, get to the bottom of that first.

Then resstart and install Skype V3. I am new to Skype (and using V4) and it suggests I could have logged on if I had a userid (user name) and password. In my case, I started new.

I read in the Skype documentation that old users die off after some modest period, so it may be necessary for them to get new account (assuming that is practical).
