Can't believe it's been 20 years...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Loma_ ... earthquake

20 years ago, right about now, I was ducking underneath a table in the conference room at work (in San Jose). A couple of visitors from Canada were in for a demo and they didn't know what to make of my behavior :) . Got home around 8:30pm, after waiting around work for about two hours to see if there were going to be any more aftershocks and to get a good idea about the road conditions being reported on the radio.

Hmm...

I had "can't believe it's been 20 years" discussion last night (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Wall)...

Although I was very young, I remember it clearly (and 2 years after, I too was under the table  , also because of aftershocks)...

Interesting...as I get more and more older, time goes faster and faster...

Of course I remember the news of the Loma Prieta earthquake, but my family moved away from southern California in 1972, so we were long gone by the time this one hit. I do remember being awakened early in the morning on February 9, 1971, when the San Fernando 'quake hit, though. We didn't have any serious damage, but I did get out of school for two or three days.

I felt that quake in Arcadia CA where I was living at the time.

Our house was 2 story with the central den having a pit style setup and the fireplace went all the way up to the ceiling which was the celing for the second floor, no first floor celing in the den area. Our fireplace was covered with lava rocks 'a la' 70's style and secured with mortar. That quake caused about 5 of them to break off and fall down.

No other damage to the house. Our school was closed for 2 days while they repaired some minor damage to various labs and whatnot.

Here in southern California, I was driving to the local Performing Arts Center to usher the opening night performance of the San Francisco Ballet.

The LA Times critic noted that the troupe seemed somewhat distracted.
