IBM a/b/g Atheros chipset able to utilitze SuperG 108Mbs?

So, the Fujitsu notebooks use the same chipset as found in our Thinkpads with the IBM a/b/g WiFi. It's the AR5001X+. Their (Fujitsu) notebooks can connect to access points at up to 108Mbs using Super G.

But, there aren't any drivers from IBM or anyone else that can utilitze SuperG. Anyone have any ideas?

I knew I was onto something. I think I've got this SuperG thing wrapped up. So, I was toying around with the Fujitsu drivers in my 3 post down. It didn't work. So, I installed IBM's newest drivers for the a/b/g WiFi card. However, I never uninstalled the Atheros Client that comes with the Fujitsu drivers.

It kept on asking me to disable the Intel Zero Configuration WiFi utility. I didn't do that until this morning. Low and behold the Atheros Client utility allows me to utilitze SuperG. However, in fustration I returned my Netgear 624 wireless router 3 days ago. So, I can't test it yet. BUT, the option is there to use SuperG.

Here's what you do.

First, upgrade to the lastest IBM a/b/g drivers, 3.1.1.5 (or something like that).

1. Download the Fujitsu drivers.

2. Run the setup utility from the Atheros_1.43 subfolder. Don't use the setup utility in the main folder (it's in Japanese).

3. Only install the Atheros Client. Nothing else.

5. Disable the Intel zero configuration. Reboot.

Now just use the Atheros Client Utility to manage your connections.

Wireless SuperG needs a different wireless chip, the new AR5005GS.

Only the AR5002, AR5004, and AR5005 series support "SuperG".

The AR5001X+ supports "108-Mbps Turbo Mode", but I think IBM's drivers don't take advantage of it.

The AR5001X+ does support SuperG.

There is some question as to "Super G" violates FCC rules. (At least that's the contention competing makers to the Atheros chips are making and asking the FCC to investigate) Until that is resolved, I'm betting IBM will take the conservative approach and not offer those features. IBM always tries to certify their products worldwide and this could come into conflict for some countries until it is determined kosher.

hmm.. so our a/b/g cards might be able to run at the 50+ mbps superG speeds? because I'm finding myself getting quickly fed up with ~19 mbps

i have successfully installed the equivalent netgear drivers on my t40p with a/b wlan solution (atheros 5211 chipset).

the netgear drivers have the "turbo" options and therefor i can easily get my internal wlan card work with my negear 802.11a access point in turbomode ("SuperG Mode for 802.11a aka Turbomode).

Peaks at 30/40 mbps dl/ul instead of 20/30.


the ibm a/b/g card has the atheros 5212 chipset. madwifi drivers are working.

can someone pls install the netgearWAG 511 drivers and try the turbomode with the a/b/g card?

its the same chipset.

Can you share exactly how you managed to make them work together?

I have tried this in the past with my T40p dual band wifi, but never able to get them to work.

When I enable the Turbo mode on my FWAG114 A band, the T40p will disconnect (as expected) but no longer able to reconnect, even after installing the WAG511 Driver Version 2.0.

The Netgear Smart Utility client did not seem to do anything.
I was thinking that this combination is not possible.

installing the wag511 drivers on a t40p thinkpad a/b wlan doesn't work because of the atheros chipset.

wag511 -> 5212 -> a/b/g

wab501 -> 5211 -> a/b

try this driver:

it has been working for me for 10 months now

btw: i tried the wag511 drivers too because the wab501 drivers are pretty old and therefor you have only WEP security options using the netgear driver software. but the wag511 drivers do not work ;(, until you do not upgrade to the a/b/g wlan minipci card.
