Torrent Downloads

#1 Post by ausmike » Wed Dec 02, 2009 6:29 am

Hello Everyone ....

a few thoughts for those who do torrent downloads of *.iso" especially OS software.....

a) why would someone give away 'money/keys' that would somewhere along the line - had to PAY FOR! ?

In my humble experiance - most times > the asnwer = " to get more money " usually from "suckers" who "should have known better!!!

TRUE CASE > EXAMPLE:
someone last MAY downloaded WINDOWS 7 ultimate ISO from torrent site and installed it in his laptop and started using it. Needless to say HE did "Activate it" , and nothing seemed wrong - HAPPY chappie and sugar > spice and all things nice!!.....long story <i know but it gets better!>

So one day he went to do his ONLINE BANKING !!!paid his bills and transferred some money between accounts and all set ......

Two weeks later.. the said person was called by the BANK saying his account was OVERDRAWN for 4 days and he better PAY UP FAST!!

ok long story short ...

Panic Panic ,,, so bank was told by 'custimer' that it was BANKS FAULT for his account being HACKED IN and rest and ,,,,.BANK>vice versa!! ,,,

SO few months later > someone from Bank called in the "EXPERTS" and cybercops and spooks crowded the NETSITE for weeks and weeks@!@....till coffees bills were more than $1M.....
Then one day some little guy thought ,,, well lets have a LOOK AT THIS GUYS house/PC/laptops etc ,,,,,,

WALLAH !!!!! Am sure everyone can guess...The Windows 7 Ultimate x64 that this guy had downloaded WAS MODIFIED to ignore Most Critical Security & Alerts etc ,,,

THERE WAS NOTHING that anyone who is not an EXPERT would have ever(never in a miilion years) known that there was a modification to what seems REAL WINDOWS ISO. The isntall even had been validated , and the guy had 'firewall hardware' antivirus etc all installed at home!!!

The super suprise = this guy worked in IT !!! and was working as a SYSTEMS MANAGER !!!

<certain details have been changed and left out for LEGAL REASON> but facts abouts OS mods are very true!

Hope this helps someone else ........

So, does that mean that those who produce firewall hardware and antivirus etc actually worked in vain simply because the ISO WAS MODIFIED to ignore Most Critical Security & Alerts etc? Does that mean that one can completely rely on Microsoft Update to give one's windows system the maximum protection even without firewall hardware and antivirus etc? Isn't it just a few mouse clicks away from turning on/off Microsoft Automatic Update? :)

BTW, I downloaded ISOs from MSDN subscription and installed win7. So far I havn't received a call from my bank.

I've split this off from the original For Sale Ad in 'Marketplace', which is NOT a discussion forum. I'll allow discussion of torrents in general in this thread, but as soon as I see mention of a torrent site by name or a link, this thread is history.

Agreed. A good cautionary tale, but there are too many potential holes in the story
