first experiences with my MacBook Pro

#1 Post by lophiomys » Fri Dec 04, 2009 2:52 pm

I'm working currently on a MacBook Pro 17" Late 2008,
i.e. the one before the Unibody.
It's quite stable and reliable in software and well built,
but I'm not really getting used to it.
- 17" wide screen is a waste of space. Most application do not
offer multi column views, so to make use of the additional width.
- the glossy screen surface is a nightmare
- the two fans are noisy after 6 months of intermittent use
- if you take it on your laps at an angle, the lid closes on its own,
the hinges do not have enough friction.
- the keyboard is really strange to me. No Tilde, no Del, etc.

just my two cents

I've owned a couple of Macbook Pros, the most recent a mid-2009 15". I have had none of those problems that you describe, in fact I think the 'glossy' LCD is one of the best out there....it's 10X better than any current model Lenovo LCD.

Well, I don't own one, but I have worked and play with new MBP 15" unibody (and older 15" and 17" versions)...

Impressions?

Regarding 17" inch on a notebook... That is too much for me...in fact, I don't consider that a notebook at all...YMMV

15" MBP Unibody? I love it, build and screen quality and excellent. It is more/less silent, although it can get pretty warm if used extensively.

No problem with hinges, nice and strong...

I'm not big fan of glossy screens, but as Harry already mentioned this one looks pretty good and in most cases strong (adjustable, ofcourse) LED backlight will neutralize any reflection...

Keyboard? I like TP's more, but the one on MBP is not so bad (although it has different cap concept), and layout is a bit different, but again, it's OK...and its backlight is very nice, although thinklight has its advantages (like light for reading papers in some cases)...

New touchpad? Intuitive and big, one of the few that I really like and use (well, the only one when i think a bit, long live trackpoint  )... No comparison is possible to my R60's touchpad (haven't tried new and bigger touchpad on new TP so no help there)...

Also I like that magnetic charger thing...I wish Lenovo considers that idea, since I will probably buy new notebook soon (not sure if it will be TP)...

Overall, I like it a lot (especially when you can load windows on it), but overpriced like any other Apple product...

Hope it helps, although I'm describing latest MBP... :)
