Which OS do most of you have on your ThinkPads?

#1 Post by A31 » Tue Dec 22, 2009 9:07 am

Would be interesting to know what the most popular OS for the ThinkPad is...just a little poll to find out!

A31

EDIT 22/12/09 19:44 (UK time!)
.Seeings as quite a lot of you have Ubuntu on your Thinkpads, I have added the option of Ubuntu and seeing that some have multiple OS's, you can now select two systems!

Run Ubuntu, Crunchbang, W7, and Windows Vista Business.

Use Linux about 95% of the time. Use Windoze to update antivirus and play my Neverwinter Nights game. I could install that game into my linux partition but it's working on W7 so I just leave it at that :)

All of my current Thinkpads (in sig) have XP. Two of them have the XP license, and two of them have Vista Business downgrade to XP license. Since my wife dislikes Vista she installed XP on her X61, and I already had a working XP T60 installation when I bought my 2007QPG, so I just migrated without reinstalling.

Whoops!! Sorry forgot to say I have XP Pro on both my laptops (check my signature)!

Interesting to see some people using Ubuntu...is it any good as I do have a Ubuntu disc. When I got the A31 it would load past the XP boot screen and to see if it was a problem with the laptop or XP, I booted off a Ubuntu disc but the system still locked up. Just reinstalled XP and it was fine...

On my T42 I have Windows 7 Professional, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows XP, Fedora 12 (Gnome), and Mandriva 2010 Powerpack (KDE). I have Win 7 and F12 on one hard drive, XP and MDV on a second hard drive, and Vista on a third hard drive. Of course I can only have 2 hard drives in the T42 at any one time. I use F12 at boot to choose which hard drive of the two in the machine gets booted. On each of the two hard drives that have Windows and Linux on them, I use the GRUB boot menu to choose which of the two OS's boots on that drive.

So which OS do I have on my ThinkPad? Hmmm.

Which OS/s are on the main HD?

Playing with so many operating system, have you considered virtual machines instead of actual installation? Or do you need raw hardware access for some of the things in each OS?

Well, the main hard drive was XP and MDV. But since I got Win7, this is in the main hard drive slot now (along with F12). The default boot is Fedora 12, yet I still have my email and email client on the other drive in XP.

I am planning on migrating from XP to Windows 7 for my main OS starting in 2010. I figured Jan. 1st was a good time to do this. I am waiting until I get home to install a new version of WordPerfect Office X4 in Win 7. I currently have WordPerfect Office 11 on XP.

Regarding Virtual Machines, I have never tried them. I guess I always figured there would be a performance hit. I am also unsure if I could make full use of all my hardware that way. Anyway, what is the benefit if it must be stored on the hard drive regardless? I certainly don't want to wait for an OS to load from a CD or DVD.

Right now, 12 of 12 have XP Pro.

I've tried several other OS's, but have gone back to XP.

My official Windows 7 upgrade CD is on the way from Lenovo for a new R500, perhaps that will be the catalyst for a switch.

It's been a nice run for XP - nearly a decade!

Well, I guess T42 really is not the ideal system for virtual machines. I was thinking in general terms. For good performance you will want a modern system with hardware CPU virtualization capabilities and 4G+ of RAM. Indeed you will not be able to have direct access to all the hardware.

The advantage is simple - you can run multiple OSes at the same time without rebooting the machine. I guess the ones who would enjoy it the most are software developers as it gives them the ability to test their code on different architectures very quickly, and also allows for testing kernel code without crashing the machine (if there is a bluescreen / hang, only the virtual machine must be restarted).

But I really was just wondering. I myself have never tried virtual machines, but I have a friend who swears by 'em, and gets them to run pretty well on his X61 Tablet. He is considering upgrading to 6-8GB of RAM though.

Depends mostly on what I have a license for. Here is what I'm running currently:

A31P - Dual boot XP and Ubuntu 9.10
600X - Win98SE
600X - Mint 5
600E - Puppy Deeper Thought
600 - Puppy 4.0

The others in my signature don't have an OS installed right now
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Initially checked just the XP box and then realized that I still have a couple of 600X systems with W98 and W2K. So it's XP and other for me. I'm not counting the "dead" systems, which if they could/would run, would have XP on them as well. I tend to only re-boot or completely shut down XP when a system update comes along and requires it, or for the very rare times, it seems like the OS is sluggish and I want to get back to a "clean slate". I almost always hibernate the systems or just leave them on (with the screen off). In fact the last time this T23's disk was rebooted was about two weeks ago when the system it was in came down with a case of loose inductor(s). It kept freezing up at random times and once had the oscillating fan problem. I swapped it into another T23 and kept going. Over the years I have found that XP is stable enough for me and given that I'm entrenched with "obsolete" hardware (see .sig), it works out just fine.

T43 has XP and Mint 8

701C runs Win 95

X60 and R6* FrankenPad both run XP.

Vista Ultimate on my 1 and only Thinkpad, my X41T.

While it does have a license for XP Pro Tablet I do not have the installation media for it.

I do own a legal retail copy of Vista, so there it is.

Runs fine.

I think I was the only one so far to choose the WinMe or lower option QQ

I run Windows 2000 on my parents X61 in dual-boot and on my T400 in VM (planning to get it to run in dual-boot once I manage to slipstream hacked ICH9M drivers).

Primarily I've moved on to Windows 7 because it works well :D

I've now upgraded my only working ThinkPad from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate.

EDIT: 29/12 2009, I no longer have Vista on the A31, I'm now back on XP Pro due a HDD change (40GB to 80GB), and Vista being too slow (didn't have enough RAM or good enough graphics card!)

For my R60 I have True Image backup of clean installs for both XP and Vista. I run whatever suits me. On my main desktop I run XP mainly because there's a bug in Vista if you're running more than one screen, which I am. It makes one wallpaper bleed into the other, which is kind of annoying. On my HTPC I run Vista because it sits kind of far away so I like the better DPI adjustment options in Vista.

Why is Ubuntu an option rather than Linux?

I run Linux on all my ThinkPads, but Ubuntu on none of them.

I agree. Linux is more than Ubuntu.

And likewise, I have two different Linux distros installed - neither one of them being Ubuntu.

I edited the poll accordingly.

Personally I use Fedora/Linux for work. I do keep Windows 7 on my rig with the best graphics card for games, but the dual head setup is Fedora, the Thinkpad runs Fedora, and my workstation runs Fedora.
