HP has claimed IPS displays used in new mobile workstations
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5583
"... the new DreamColor display option now utilizes a true 30-bit IPS LCD panel able to display more than 1 billion active colors – 64 times the capabilities of a traditional display – and provide extreme viewing angles."
Lenovo still can not find the right lcd panel supplier ?

Re: HP has announced IPS displays for new mobile workstations
There is already a related discussion -> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=86172
So far it was uncertain whether the new HP DreamColor display for mobile really has an IPS panel. Now you confirmed this great piece of news
I am wondering though how soon other vendors will follow this example...
Slightly off topic: To be honest, I don´t like the look of the new HP Elitebook. IMHO The selection of colours and overall design appear somewhat cheap... The Dell Precision (not the orange one) looks so much more decent.

Re: HP has announced IPS displays for new mobile workstations
I'm still not convinced that it is true. When you configure one or reading press material on HPs website, there is no mention of IPS, only "WVA" which can be implemented by a different polarizer. In the case of HPs ZR24W, they were extremely clear at stating that it used an IPS panel.
Also, 30 bit would totally drain the battery, due to the crazy amount of look-ups to be performed - the trade-off might be a reduzed refresh-rate. Or maybe it's just an illusion - so the LCD manufacturer (likely LGP) is forced to hide the data sheet forever
So nothing has been confirmed yet. At demo shows, HP always has the laptop with dreamcolor display matched to the dreamcolor desktop display (LP2480ZX) which might lead reviewers to believe that both are identical in specs.

Re: HP has announced IPS displays for new mobile workstations
Well said, I concur. Yet as an owner of both the latest Dell & HP workstations, what concerns me most about Dell is their spotty (at best) support services online. Driver databases and the type of online self service resources are modest at best. HP is a bit better, yet has a long way to go.Marin85 wrote: Slightly off topic: To be honest, I don´t like the look of the new HP Elitebook. Re: HP has announced IPS displays for new mobile workstations
It's not IPS. It is a 10-bit TN panel.
The IPS rumor probably started because of the WVA tag, as you rightly point out, Troels.
HP have used WVA in their LCD descriptions many times before, for example on the HP 8730w. The only WVA + Dreamcolor (DC1, first gen) panel they offered on that model is the WUXGA RGB LED WVA (1920 x 1200).
Am I right in thinking that you own that one, Archer6? Is that an 8-bit panel? Could you post your panel manuf. number (easy to find with a tool such as PC Wizard).

Thanks for giving me another reason not to abandon the ThinkPad brand (not that I would have...)gaphic2 wrote:It's not IPS. It is a 10-bit TN panel.

Re: HP has claimed IPS displays used in new mobile workstations
It says here that at least some of the panels for the W701 are the Samsung LTN170CT08. And someone with a M6500 posted the same panel number here.
The current HP 8740w sans Dreamcolor 2 is also supposed to have wide viewing angles. Although this is spec'd at only ±65° Horizontal, ±55° Vertical(typical) here, so not at all in the range of IPS, AFFS, PVA or MVA.
I think the HP 8740w Dreamcolor 2 will have a newer screen. 10-bit for starters. Dell has had 8-bit panels out in notebooks before.

Re: HP has announced IPS displays for new mobile workstations
Me too. But it would be nice if so because "someone has finally noticed the problem". The simplest way to confirm it would be to find a unit with at least one dead pixel.Troels wrote:I'm still not convinced that it is true.
As for 6/8/10-bit buzzwords. I'm still not convinced that more than true 6-bit (thus no dithering) TN panels exists. It would be probably more like 8-bit LUT for a 6-bit panel only. And yes, good old IBM 6-bit IPS panel still outperforms "so called" Dream/Super/Hyper/2 12-bit TN panel in any aspect.
The same like "2 ms response time" which is only a dream or rather a false marketing fluff. All TN panels are 12 ms at the best. Better response time can be achieved by using excessive overdrive only which affects picture quality (well, there is none on TN anyway) and decreases panel lifetime.
