types of display, any new laptops with IPS ?

Out of interest, does anyone still sell laptops with IPS displays ? My limited understanding of display technologies is that IPS displays are much nicer than "normal" displays (had use of a flexview T42p briefly, which had a great display, even had a lovely even deep black unlike the T61p I'm currently using).

If you want to try explaining the relative quality of other types of display, and pros/cons of the types of backlighting available go ahead, I'm interested ! I'm aware that the Lenovo screens at the moment are of, umm, average quality.

Subaverage at least. T400s is having a "display" with real world contrast ratio 98:1 I don't think you would even find such component ten years ago.

From I've seen R61 had an acceptable (given current hopeless situation on the notebook market) 15" WSXGA+ panel (contrast ratio over 600:1) and 15" FHD W510 also looks promising (contrast ratio over 500:1).

Otherwise it is a disaster. I'd like to get a 12" X model with SXGA+ or better resolution but the only way to get a decent notebook is this great mod which can be applied to some X200 units only and no longer works for X201.

Yes, that is something that made me wonder too. I replaced my R61 with T61 (with 14" SXGA+ panel) and was astonished to learn than in opposition to what I believed in terms of LCD panel this was rather downgrade than upgrade. The panel of my T61 was really horrible in comparison to that of R61. Now it is back to normal again because I have T500 with WSXGA+ about which as I already pointed out I have no reason to complain.

Let's hope Lenovo will include them in the following line-up refresh.

Unfortunately they seem to be 16:9, not 16:10 and especially not 4:3...

Hopefully someone can convince them to make 16:10 or 4:3 ratio displays in IPS in sizes smaller than 14" or 15"

X200/s with AFFS mod is a rather straightforward way to get an "IPS" ThinkPad (AFFS is a modified IPS tech).
