Keyboard & Mouse Addict

#1 Post by schen » Thu Apr 08, 2010 11:33 am

I'm curious, now that I've decided to come clean and admit my Keyboard/Mouse addiction. Just on my desktop alone, I've gone through 3 complete sets of input devices in the last year!

I started out with the Logitech DiNovo Bluetooth Set, decided I hate wireless keyboards, but don't like "regular" (non-laptop) style keys, so moved on to the Kensington Ci70 Keyboard with the Logitech MX Mouse and have now settled on that mouse in combination with the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard!

Plus I've also accumulated not only a wide variety of IBM Keyboard (both wired and wireless), but the compact (server) version of the Trackpoint IV KB, the VERY old (PS2 Era) compact trackpoint KB that has the detachable keypad and most recently an UltraNav KB! Plus I've owned the a "M" style TrackPoint KB as well as the regular TrackPoint II KBs in both black and beige!

 I've come to the conclusion that I have an illness. I wonder if I can get disability for it.

I've decided to my little issue- Digititus

I think that's a good name, although I really think its dangerously close to an actual medical condition.

You'll need Digitalis to cure that!

In the course of helping you out I would be more than happy to take that DiNovo setup off your hands.

To um, help you with your, um addiction.

Yeah, that's it. 8)

I'm not sure that my signature is much better and my keyboard/mouse addiction is really worse than what it would appear. I haven't even discussed the ones that I've used on my machine at work! They issued us a basic Logitech wireless setup along with our R60s. I then switched myself back to a Belkin set that I already had, then recently, the Belkin KB started acting strangely and in keeping with my philosophy that wireless keyboards are bad, I've now taken the deposed Kensington Ci70 to work and am using a Logitech MX Anywhere mouse with it. Along with that, I also have a DiNovo Mini that I use when I'm teaching and walking around in the middle of the classroom and don't want to go back and forth to my desk or the SmartBoard!

My co-workers have taken to coming in periodically to see what it is that I'm currently using!

Sorry Temetka; I sold off the first DiNovo set a few months ago or you could have had it for a song. If I was going to keep a wireless keyboard, it would have been that one. I really liked having the separate number pad that I could just pull out when I needed it.

I understand where you're coming from...here's my story that I'm sure you'll find laughable...

Old enough to have learned to type on old-time mechanical typewriters. Where I grew up we didn't get to see too many IBM Golfballs... :D although Olivettis were quite common.

My first (and so far only) novel was written by hand and then typed...on a mechanical typewriter. At that time, most of the world was using PCs (think SX386 era), including majority of the people I was surrounded by...

Fast forward a few years, I'm trying to find a keyboard (as in PC keyboard) that I like and I can't. That's one of the things that got me into ThinkPads - the keyboard on my "work" T20. Not quite a typewriter, but a good enough feel.

I have an almost unused, dead mint, mid-90s model M that I got as a gift a few years back still sitting in my workroom wrapped, never ever plugged.

The only time I ever use a mouse is when I'm in the field with my CF-29 ToughBook which has a horrible touchpad, unlike the other Panasonics. And that's an old (circa 2000) IBM mouse. In most cases, it's still the same T20 that still goes with me a decade later. The ToughBook stays locked unless I'm going into less-than-desirable neighbourhoods...

So you see, I ended up in the direct opposite direction from yours. But from that very angle, your "addiction" makes a lot of sense and is perfectly understandable.

As for myself, I still write most of my stuff by hand, then type. But now it's on a ThinkPad.

If and when I get to finally organizing myself enough to start working on my next book I might go back to the typewriter. Being perfectly serious here.

Enjoy your addiction. It's a good one.

There are worse addictions. I once had about a dozen CP/M computers.

I thought my small collection of old IBM, Tandy & Microsoft mice was unusual. I almost got a GE mouse with 5 buttons and 2 wheels at a thrift shop once, but I didn't grab it fast enough. I really want an original MS Intellimouse Explorer, to go with my Naturals Pro Keyboard, that looks so funny sitting in front of my little 240.

An Intellimouse Pro (I may have the wrong name for the one I'm thinking of) would be more of a collectors item. It was only out for a short time then MS got in trouble for stealing the idea. Some people never learn.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go see if the thrift shop has any cool collectible mice or CP/M computers. I'll let you know if they have any good keyboards. :)

Have: Biege Model M in many pieces (Cantilever got deseated, never bought screws to reassemble)
Replaced by: Black Model M13 from a trade

Had: 3+ Logitech G7s (Warranty! Arrrgghhh, mouse button dies.), the evil vile optical mice that Logitech used to sell (The blue ones with the silver button) that kept dying for no reason and giving me wrist pains
Replaced by: Razer Mamba (Great improvement over the G7), Model M13 trackpoint
Also have: Logitech Trackman Marble+ (Flakey, dying)

Kind of interested in staring at these things: Das Keyboard (Mechanical instead of buckling spring), Datahand (...For some reason), maybe chorded keyboards if I can reach close to 150WPM (120WPM is acceptable, too.)

Still have: A bunch of T43 keyboards with flakey keys (Got to keep them because of that)

Counts as keyboard and pointing device: M13, T43, T410

Just out of curiosity, what's the weirdest or coolest mouse or keyboard you've ever had or seen?

The weirdest keyboard I've ever seen came out in the early 1990's when the "ergonomic" craze first hit. The two halves weren't just separated - They were completely detachable! So were the function keys and keypad! You could disconnect everything, and have pieces of keyboard all over your desk.

The weirdest mouse I ever saw is in a box of junk at the only local computer store and as far as I'm concerned it can stay there. It's a hideous thing. The part you hold is round, almost a hemisphere, and the buttons stick out in front of it - way out - like mickey mouse ears, but slightly pointed. There's no brand name on it. I wouldn't claim it either.

The coolest mouse I ever saw was in Radio Shack and JDR Microdevices catalogs around 1991-1992. I was still in high scool and broke or I'd be using one now.

It was an ordinary serial mouse with one small exception.

It had about 26 buttons.

Hmmm, maybe one of the following? "Das Keyboard Ultimate", or "Luxeed U5 Dynamic Pixel LED Keyboard", or "Cyborg Robotic Gaming Keyboard", or "Bluetooth Laser Virtual Keyboard", or "Roll-Up Keyboard", or maybe the "Optimus Maximus Keyboard", or the "DX1 Input System"

You might be interested in the WarMouse.

Personally, I find the keyboard to be the least of my problems. I think too slow for the it to have any significant effect on my wpm. Not that I don't enjoy a nice Thinkpad keyboard.

The button placement on that doesn't look too... Practical or ergonomic.

The best-looking mouse I am aware of is the IBM ScrollPoint Pro.
