should i buy a w700 or an asus laptop? for games

#1 Post by imnotahippie » Sun May 23, 2010 8:22 am

ive been trying to figure out what kind of laptop i want. i love the w510 but i don't like the 16:9 ratio. plus the 880m gpu isn't the best, but it dose have a core i7.

the w700 has a great gpu but not a great cpu.

i want to stick with ibm because ever since my first thinkpad r51 ive loved them then got the t40p, r50p, t42, t60 and i'm using my t61p now.

but i can't afford the w701.

just so you know i play alot of games such as counter strike source and battlefield bad company 2.

so i'm basing what to get off of being able to play batterlfield bad company 2 and anything higher then minimum settings that i'm currently using.

anyways any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks again.

btw the asus g73 has great stuff but ITS HUGE! then again for 1200 bucks you get a core i7 1.6, 6GB, 500gig drive and a ati 5770 1gig card.
but its really really big and heavy and its not an ibm.

Regarding W700, both X9100 and QX9300 are still great cpus! As for the graphics, Qaudro FX3700M is without question a powerful card, but it is designed rather for professional applications than games, so its gaming performance may not be as optimal as with its gaming counterpart. Having said this, I am hearing that it is still great for many games (with maxed-out settings). Don´t underestimate the W700, it IS huge and heavy! What are you willing to spend on a W700 unit?

The ATI 5870 appears to be currently the best single gaming card for mobile platforms and also comes with GDDR5 and DX11 unlike Quadro FX3800M found in W701 and would provide similar (if not better) gaming performance (better due to the Quadro being designed for professional apps).

If it is all about gaming, how about Alienware laptops? :)

Cheers,

Marin

well i have been using my t61p for gaming since i bought it 3 years ago and its been great for that.
and as for the 5870 on 3dmarks it got about the same score as the 3700 did.

i'm looking to spend about $2000 for a comp but if i go with the w700 it'll have a core 2 duo in in.

buy a high quality 24" 1920x1200 or a 30" 2560x1600 external monitor and get the best of it all.

24" monitors are el cheapo these days.

thats a good idea. but my issue is that i'm on the road 8 months out of the year staying in hotels and such for my work. so taking a desktop with me would be a real pain.

Um, the W700 would be kind of like using a blade chassis and a blade server to run SETI@Home in terms of "excessive firepower" to obliterate something.

Mind you, I would actually take a W701DS over my desktop at one point, even if my desktop is this quad HDD, 8800GTX, i7 monster. (Mainly for stability.)

Remember: Professional graphics solutions have higher bandwidth for professional software suites, "gaming cards" tell this concept of "bandwidth" to go die in a pit so they can achieve higher clockspeeds in the name of shiny specs to sell to the idealized "gamer market" of transitioning console players with limited attention spans.
