Laptops on laps and the risk to er...uhmm...'the boys'

#1 Post by raisindot » Thu Mar 03, 2005 9:34 am

Studies have come out saying that the heat generated by laptops sitting on our laps could er..uhmm...fry our collective male procreative abilities.

Well, I keep my T40 on my lap all the time 'cos I use it on the train, and, in spite of everything, the thing does get kind of hot after awhile. Thankfully, I've already...er...uhm...completed all the procreating I want to do, but what about all those young, single engineers out there? Are we sacrificing the opportunity to pass on our genes in the name of increased mobile activity?

Would one of those "lap fan" things help alleviate the problem, but isn't there even greater risk should the bottom fan guard break and....YOWSA!

Or, perhaps is the research skewed to the effect that instead of hot laps causing infertility, it may actually be that men who are already infertile are more likely to use laptops on their laps?

Please discuss.

Must be some short legged folks if they need to worry about this.

I'm sitting right now with my T40 on my lap and it's nowhere even close to Big Jim and the Twins, probably because I'm 2M tall. Is this really a problem for you folks who are vertically challenged? Do you need to turn your laptop, in effect, into a bellytop in order to keep it in a usable position? Never gave this much thought.

I can easily see this being a problem with some of the desktop P4 processor based machines, but I've never seen my T40 hot enough to be more than noticeable, let alone uncomfortable.

Hence the reason they are no longer called Laptops but instead Mobiles.

I'm in the mid 5's (that's mesuring in feet) for height, so I can vouch for some of the short folks. When laying down or sitting in a recliner, the bottom half of the computer SOMETIMES meets the family, but that's it. When sitting up and using the computer, it's nowhere near the firehose. Also, my laptop has the CPU in the back, so even when laying down, the part of the computer that heats up is still only touching my legs.

Risking a few chuckles .. I remember reading about one of those "primitive" societies studied by "modern day" anthroplogists who discovered that the natives were practicing birth control ... the men satin hot tubs of water prior to intercourse because this reduced the probability of impregnation.

It seem that the present topic talks to the same issues.

Now is this ON TOPIC, or what?

Ha ha ha... Must have been using laptops with Prescott cores in them or something. Well, come to think of it, I could see that being a problem with that Dell Latitude D600 I had. Boy did that get hot! My T42 is no problem at all though. I'm 5' 6" and it doesn't normally sit THAT close. Must have been a pretty hot laptop they were using in those studies.

OK..

a female brain cell was lost one evening and found herself in a male head..

it was pitch black and she could see nothing..

a big empty space..

SO, a bit scared, this female brain cell called out "is anyone here..??"

there was no response..

so, again, she called out "is anyone here..??"

again, no reply was heard..
except for a slight echo..

so, once again and now really worried, this female brain cell calle out in a strong loud voice: "is anyone here..??"

FINALLY, after this last plea for someone to answer, she heard the very faint reply:

"we're all down here!"

... hopefully well protected by this kind of application or similar products by other vendors.

Shame is that I'm not getting a single penny for promoting their products, or just a sample (-:

oh, and: LOL, Bill!

Anybody so dumb as to sit there and let themselves be burned by a laptop shouldn't reproduce anyway.

Funny. No, not the feeling between my legs. I'm speaking about the thread.
