Adobe Flash Player

#1 Post by TTY » Fri Jun 11, 2010 2:51 am

Adobe has released Version 10.1 of Flash Player. The new version resolves a vulnerability that was present in previous versions. For Windows, Flash Player 10.1 is available in a version for Internet Explorer and in another version for other browsers. Windows users who use IE as well as other browsers should install both versions of Flash Player.

Major reason to upgrade to Flash 10.1 is that it enables hardware acceleration. Been using the beta on my NVidia Ion powered Acer Aspire Revo 3610 since I had it and it made a world of difference to HD Flash videos (well, it made them playable basically).

To whom it may concern, the built-in graphics of the 915 platform used on some ?41-series doesn't seem to be able to benefit from it, the CPU usage remains high during Flash video playback.

Not that it's a significant issue, but someone may want to know.

Cheers.

This might sound naive, but how does one tell if Adobe Flash Player is installed on one's machine? I had a search on mine and Macromedia Flash is on there somewhere, and it seems to have the Adobe flash symbol associated. Is this the same as Adobe Flash?

Sorry to have to ask this question but maybe I am not alone? :?

I believe that Macromedia Flash was the pre-cursor to Adobe Flash. In other words, Adobe paid $$$$ for Macromedia. Oh, and "how to tell if it's installed?". Generally you'll see a pop-up or message that indicates the web page you are viewing is not a complete experience because you're missing the Flash player. You can also visit this site:

http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

and you'll see which version (if any) is installed.

Yeah! I was wondering at some point what I was missing in all that Flash saga, and indeed, the name of Macromedia just disappeared one day... The other day I installed Sun (!) VirtualBox and it promptly prompted me to update it to Oracle VirtualBox (lol). It will be a very sad day for the earth if the sun really stops shining one day...

But back on topic :D, I have just finished updating FF3 add-ons/ins and -outs and with pleasure I have already noticed the nice performance of the Flash 10.1 with 1080p videos! At the beginning, FF didn´t want to update to v10 because it is supposedly vulnurable, so I had to manually update right to v10.1, which FF haven´t complained about so far.

Marin, is it working with hardware acceleration on the Z61p, or is it a different laptop/desktop you've tried it on? The reason is that i noticed these notes from Adobe ( http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/systemreqs ):
AMD/ATI Hardware video decoding of H.264 content in Flash Player 10.1 is supported on AMD/ATI products with UVD2 with the ATI Catalyst™ Software Suite, starting with version 9.11 for the ATI Radeon™ family of products, and driver release 8.68 for the ATI FirePro™ family of products. Family Product Radeon Radeon HD 4xxx (and higher) Mobility Radeon Mobility Radeon HD 4xxx series (and higher) Integrated/Motherboard Radeon HD 3xxx (and higher) FirePro FirePro V3750, FirePro V7750, FirePro V8700, and FirePro V8750 (and later)
Are you sure you got it to work properly on the V5200?

No, I am not :) To be honest, I doubt it makes any usage of my V5200 at all. I guess my post was slightly misleading given the context. I think, 10.1 also has improved cpu utilization, thus making the playback of 1080p much smoother (compared to 9). And while we are on this topic, it seems the FireGL Mobility V5200 cannot be used for any GPGPU tasks at all (or at least there is no support for such from AMD/ATI).
