ThinkPad UltraBay/Plus In ThinkPads

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Sun Oct 17, 2010 2:40 pm

I'm Guessing, The UltraBay/Plus works in the A2X, A3X, R3X, R4X, T2X, X2X, X3X.
Does it also works in the current ThinkPads like the T410 and such or did they change the plug in type? May get a brand new ThinkPad someday and it would be great to still use all my older ThinkPad hardware

The series you have listed use Ultrabay 2000, and some of them (the more modern ones) have a Ultrabay Plus. That is not a complete list, though (missing T30, A20, A30; see ThinkWiki article). Unfortunately, you cannot use those devices directly in any later ThinkPads.

The ThinkPad Dock II has a UB2000, which will allow you to use those devices with the T40 generation. Other than that, you can try to use your UB2000 devices with a Portable Drive Bay 2000.

So all I could do then is use my Portable Drive Bay 2000 on later ThinkPads via USB cable since most laptops are now not coming with PCMCIA anymore. atleast my newest ThinkPad I have "ThinkPad SL500" has no PCMCIA on it.

Also does all new ThinkPads read from external USB HDDs during startup now? I have a UltraBay HDD aswell.

As far as I know, yes, definitely. I think just about every computer since 2003 supports booting from USB devices. Exceptions do exist, though: I know that Sony has restricted some of their VAIO laptops to boot only from original Sony accessories.
