IBM/lenovo Repair

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Tue Nov 09, 2010 2:21 am

I was thinking of sending my ThinkPad T30 & T40 to IBM/lenovo for repair. How much would it cost for them to repair it and how long would it take and can they be trusted with your ThinkPad?

I tryed to get my T30 back under warranty with the upgrade warranty, but found out they don't warranty any machine under 5 years old. So if your ThinkPad is under 5 years old from the date build, you can't get the upgrade warranty. they did tell me they still can fix your ThinkPad.

I don't trust my self with repairing the mainboards as I did see some steps on how to but may damage it. and I don't trust some ebay seller saying send us your laptop for repair, as you risk a chance of never getting it back or getting it back with parts missing with them saying you never sent that item with it.

Why not seek a forum member to do the work. IBM/Lenovo is going to charge you a fortune, surely more than both machines are worth. I know of a couple of members in Pa. who might consider the job. Start with ajkula66 and RBS. If they are not interested I have a couple of more names. PM me for them. If you get stuck I'd even consider doing it. Get a quote from Lenovo and let me know what they'll charge, and we'll go from there.

lenovo will probably say we have to diagnose before we can give you a price.

what your up againest:
ThinkPad T30: memory slot error due too common loos solder joins. LCD fuzzy,"view my post on that" ThinkPad T40: GPU needs reflow. powers on and shows no display. Ive added a T43 cooling fan that covers the CPU and GPU. was running fine last year.
I took both systems apart and cleaned them out "dust and dirt"

I remeber I took my 560X to BestBuy for repair and all they tryed doing was to sell me a new laptop, they said we don't fix laptops and yet there were 3 people there with laptops and their tech people had them completely striped down. my guess in order for them to fix your computer, you must buy it from them.

RBS would be a good contact for the GPU reflow. He works with another member in the UK who owns a company that does those. The T30 is not worth fixing unless you can find someone to do the solder work on the memory slot. I don't do that. Even Lenovo would not do that level of repair, they'd replace the entire systemboard. Perhaps someone else can make a recommendation.

RBS is most definitely the person you need to speak to regarding both of your sickly ThinkPads.

Whenever I lose patience with a ThinkPad, I throw it in the back of my car and off to his house we go...he saved several machines for me that would've ended up in pieces otherwise...

what is his contact information? I try to take care of my ThinkPads, I may slap it like I did to my T30. but no hammer to it  very temped sometimes, but I know that would make it completely not work and have to buy more parts.

Well I solved my T40s problem well atleast for the replacement board I bought for it. I bought a T43 board, that didn't power on. I took out the AC plug in jack out of my R51 board and it powered on. So I now just need to get DDR2 RAM now since DDR1 out of my T40 will not work in it. 4 more ThinkPads to fix now. My T30 with its explained problem, A30 with a dark display and 560X with the same problem as the A30 and my 570 rather a power on password than a hardware problem.

Any trusted member that can fix these?

I got my ThinkPad T40 & R51 completely done and working, T43 board in T40 and R51 board with Intel Graphics.

Need my ThinkPad 560X, A30 and T30 fixed all three seem to have the same problem. dark display on 560X & A30 T30 with a fuzzed up LCD.

Or if its better and cheaper I can just get used working boards for them. What is the best if so for them? 560X I'll just get another working one. Are there any Intel A30 boards and T30?

The memeber said he don't do repairs to ThinkPads anymore, only his. So I bought a working A30 and 560X motherboard. will do more work on my T30.

I did a check on IBM repairs and found this page of there repair log.
http://www-03.ibm.com/support/ezserv/pricing.jsp

would the Graphics card be considered number 1? reseating cards?

There's no "re-seating cards" when it comes to graphics on ThinkPads, apart from G41 and W7xx.

Tier 3, motherboard replacement.
