The Slim media setup

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Wed Nov 10, 2010 2:50 am

Here I'm going to talk about my exp of eliminating all my DVDs and such witch some people have done or were wanting to do. As for me and my PC collection and switching over to using SSD & CF over HDD. I replaced all my DVDs on one single CF card atleast a few for now. For example I copied my entire MacGyver DVD collection to a CF card and installed it in my UltraBay 2000 HDD adapter. To make it more exciting I printed a sticker of the MacGyver DVD cover and pasted on the CF card. All my movies are on CF cards, witch as time goes by more capcity of CFs will become bigger and may even someday fit my entire DVD collection on one card.

Interesting. I can't wait until movies and music come on SD/memory stick or some other flash memory card.

What software are you using to convert the DVDs and what format are you using for the converted video?
T510, i7-620m, NVidia, HD+, 8GB, 180GB Intel Pro 1500 SSD, Webcam, BT, FPR Home
T400s, C2D SP9400, Intel 4500MHD, WXGA+, 8GB, 160GB Intel X18-M G2 SSD, Webcam, BT, FPR Travel

Most DVD conversion software will let you convert a DL DVD (9 Gb) down to 4.7 Gb with marginal loss of quality, but at that rate, a 32 Gb CF card will only hold 6-7 DVDs. If saved in another format, like DIVx or h263/h264, you can get them down to 1Gb/movie with more noticeable loss of picture quality.
A31p: 2653-N5U, 1.7GHz, 1.5GB, 320GB (upgr), CDRW/DVD, Win XP-Pro SP3
X41: 2528-5FU, 1.5 Ghz, 2GB, 40GB, Win XP-Pro SP3

For the ThinkPad collectors.

So I got all my ThinkPads a 16GB CF card and one CF card adapter. All my ThinkPads will share the adapter and have its own HDD "CF" this will save money in the long run of not having to buy a CF adapter case for each laptop. Heres a image of my setup.

I even printed out a sticker for each card. for example in the image. my IBM ThinkPad T20
