Buying new Lenovo computer? BETTER WAY TO DO THIS

#1 Post by Wojciech_czyz » Mon Dec 06, 2010 1:45 pm

I am sure you have been searching for a new computer several times. Quite a time consuming work to do, was not it?
We have tried to make a new search engine that would reduce this effort, I would like to know your opinion about it!

http://www.innovation4information.com/E ... puter.aspx

It is a Lenovo only computer search engine, working across all product lines and all computers - laptops, desktops, servers and net books.
All comments, improvement ideas, criticism, etc are very welcome!

Thank you!

It is a reasonable start, IMO, however it needs to make better use of drop down options for one's requirements. I entered my requirements (very limited list) and it tended to offer cheaper kit than I have. There is a reason why I paid more, which I have mentioned on here before ... SPACED:

Security
Performance
Appearance
Convenience
Economy
Durability

These are the 6 reasons for buying anything. For some, economy is the most important. But what is a bargain for one person is cheap rubbish to another.

I hope this makes sense. :)

Hello "Killer",

Thank you for the quick reply. Your point is a good one.
There is an idea behind our search - hide the details of the parameters, so that "high level" ideas will be entered textually, and then the system will break them down to parameters which user can tune.

It takes a moment, as we are all to used to the google way of searching where the user have to really think about all the keywords. So instead, in our search you say what is what you are really looking for - computer for a travel, high performance one, prestige building laptop etc... We will translate those to the detailed parameters and then let you play with their values.

Have a look at:
http://www.innovation4information.com/E ... merce.aspx
for a really nice explanation.

How did you liked it?

How do you define a "student computer"? All students aren't the same and each student will have their own computational requirements. For example, if you are referring to the students who work in my lab, even the most powerful laptops aren't fast enough because we routinely work on files larger than 7 GB each. Similarly, not everyone needs the same kind of "computer for a travel". Some need to have a built-in optical drive but others don't; some prefer tiny netbooks that weigh under 3 lb while others don't mind lugging around a 6lb 16-incher; etc. In other words, your search engine is based on arbitrarily defined search terms and is useful only to people who happen to agree with the way you define these terms.

The best laptop search engine I have seen is, by far, Newegg's Power Search, and IMO, that's the only kind of laptop search engine that can be useful to lots of people.

@Wojciech_czyz:

I'm not happy with the design concept. Sorry, matey, but I'd rather be sincere than ignore the question. You asked for comments and mine is to go back to square one and think about why would anyone want to use your gadget?

Yahoo used to be the most popular search engine until Google came along. You need to come up with a Google-type offering if you wish to attract people to use your offering. I hate to be blunt, but you aren't there yet.

Do not give up!! You have a great idea. Just start again because you can't move a hole by digging it deeper. :)

Thats exactly why you have the bars to refine the requirements. Enter the page, press search and move the bars.

Now that is exactly you were looking for, right?

Hello "killer",

we are waiting for the ideas and hints how to improve it. So as long as you say what exactly would you want to have added (and I remember your query about the basic parameters / we will add them!) we are able to do it. Any other impoprovements I missed from your posts?

@Wojciech_czyz:

It is good to know that you are not upset by constructive criticism. I have lots of ideas for you but it is way past my bedtime and it will have to wait. Do you have an easier name than Wojciech_czyz ?

What I intend to do is to revisit recent purchases by friends, family, and myself to decide on the criteria we all used. There will be a thread. I'll try to pass on the info to you. Perhaps I'll do it by PM so it is not open to all.

Don't you think that innovation4information graphical search engine is better than the one proposed by lenovo?

Thank you for your feedback! We would love to talk about this with the correct person from Lenovo marketing, possibly somebody can point us the correct contact?
Thank you,
