Any One interested in testing some software?

#1 Post by erdesw » Mon Dec 13, 2010 1:43 pm

I have a piece of software I wrote one night as a quick fix for a problem I was having. Anyhow over the past year I have put a little time into here and there. In the end I had a pretty useful program that I poured a lot of hours into. I am wondering if anyone is willing to give it a test drive so I can bug check it. It is basically bug free, but that statement is based off my use on the development computer, so I doubt "basically bug free" applies. It is free too. I am hosting it off a server I have on my domain: go127001.com. Get it, go 127.0.0.1. It is a joke based off a T-Shirt I saw that said "I want to go 127.0.0.1..." I was planning on using it for some kind of terminal services gateway and offline backup eventually, but have not had time to setup a web page (see below).

Before I explain the app. I want to give some background on it. I wrote this app. because I worked full-time and liked to stay up late but would fall asleep with my computer running. This was especially true with DVD's playing. Now, if you have ever used a DVD you know the title sequence loops music and images, and ultimately when the movie is done, this nasty noisy loop returns. So naturally when you fall asleep the title loop pops up and ends up waking you up at 3,4,5 AM in the morning to fumble around and shutdown the PC. One night I got sick of it and wrote the app. It was a basic at first (if interested I will throw older versions up on my server to show how far it has come...), but it accomplished its task: shutoff your media player, and if you so choose your PC as well. There are probably many ways to do this and many applications but I wrote something simple and suited to the purpose. The shutdown is a simple function that runs of an integer and windows WMI hooks. This allowed me to implement greater functionality as I was developing.

As of now it can do everything from sleep to shutdown and logoff. It takes in a list of programs you want to shutoff at a certain time remaining on the clock. It allows you to save lists for specific tasks and load them later. It also allows you to custom the defaults so it will load a specific list by default with specific options for timers, event types, etc. It is still pretty basic. I am about to overhaul the code. I wrote it sloppy to start and added on to it, so I need to clean it up a bit and optimize it. The GUI is written using windows forms in C# .NET 4.0. I will build specific versions upon request and upload them. Currently I have x86 and x64 .exe's. Also, the GUI text is the size acceptable by a senior citizen. I made it that way to make it easy to read when viewing a 22" monitor in 1080P from 10 feet away. It looks ridiculous up close but fine from far away. Stick it on your other monitor and watch movies on the primary. Next major build will probably make it smaller.
As far as future ideas, I am currently working on moving the application into a manager that will allow a user to run an application/process inside a wrapper, that will launch the shutdown GUI. This is a separate project and isn't done yet. I am also thinking of adding networking components, so that the user can connect to the GUI via the network and light it off, or can light off multiple instances with the same params. Any ideas let me know.

you can reach me at erdesw@go127001.com for bugs, suggestions, and requests. Please send/link/paste the settings from the .cfg file you used with a short error description. This helps when debugging.

If you like the idea send comments/suggestions/bugs, and share with friends!!!

Note: Requires .NET 4.0, if you want a different version (e.g. don't want to install 4.0 and have 3.5 or 2.0) I can try to build one for you. I think the lowest I can support is 3.5 but wouldn't hurt to ask and I will try.

Thanks!

I suggest to make a .net 2.0/sp1 version, as that is what most people have anyway.
.net 4.0 is fast becoming bloatware...
