Lunar eclipse Dec 20-21 2010

#1 Post by rkawakami » Tue Dec 21, 2010 2:57 am

<split from "You did what with what?" topic>

A quick but worthwhile viewing of the lunar eclipse a few moments ago. A short break in the cloud cover here in the South Bay and the moon was just slightly tinged in white along the "northern" edge (not quite at totality). A good sized Ursid meteorite also made an appearance :) .

Still off topic, but the lunar eclipse we had this morning was the first time since 1638 that it has occurred on the shortest day. 8)

And the longest lunar eclipse in 500 years. You can see a good time-lapse show of it here.

Took a break from finals cramming to stare at the moon. It was a perfectly clear night here, and we watched from about 3/4 covered to entirely covered. What a neat phenomenon.
