Did Anyone Get a New ThinkPad for Christmas?

#1 Post by emtee3511 » Sun Dec 26, 2010 12:44 pm

I didn't -- but for my son's (nearly Christmas)Birthday I purchased an excellent X61 from a Forum member; added a 128gb SSD purchased from another Forum member; and upgraded the OS to Windows 7. Made a really nice, fast, snappy machine...

Then he came home for Christmas (from two years in Korea, now posted at Fort Polk, LA) and brought with him the T61 we had given him for high school graduation. He looks at his machine as a computer -- not a project to tinker, and tinker, and tinker with... He had some issue in Korea which had caused his HD to crash, and had decided it was because of Microsoft Updates -- so he had not done a single update for more than a year -- what a mess...

Then Son tells me, "Mom, thank you so much for the new computer -- I really appreciate it -- but I really like my old computer..." So I spent the three days before Christmas trying to save all his programs/itunes/etc. -- dumping a bit of garbage (?keylogger?), and updating his Vista OS enough that it would allow me to upgrade to Windows 7 -- also purchased a 256gb :)Wow SSD for his Christmas present from a Forum member and installed -- Now Middle Son is extremely happy with his "new" T61 --

And I guess that leaves me with a really snappy X61, which I don't need but really like -- guess that's Merry Christmas to me --

It was destiny for you to have it  ... and yes I bought myself a T400 from a forum member for Christmas. It needs a bunch of work, but that's the fun part for me.
Happy Holidays :santa:

Congrats on your Christmas "T", Harry :D

I would probably enjoy working on my ThinkPads more if I were better at it -- because I understand very little of what I am trying to do, it takes LOTS of time for me to accomplish anything -- but you are right -- it is fun, and I love knowing I have done it myself --

As for my X61, you are also right -- a very nice Christmas present, which I would not have purchased for myself, but was destined to join my 'clan' :)

Close before Christmas I bought a Z61m for my wife and a 240 for me. It was not as an "official" Christmas present, but "unofficialy" they are :D (just lucky that they were offered for a good price almost at the same time). Wife is really happy with the Z and I'm also very happy how nice the 240 turned to be...

Tasurinchi-- "before Christmas I bought a Z61m for my wife"

My youngest son is 19 and has Down Syndrome. For Christmas I upgraded his Z61m with a SSD -- it always was a responsive machine, but with the SSD for Christmas, along with a little bump up in ram to 3gb (from 1gb) it's real snappy now. I'm not sure he notices the difference, but I do. He mostly uses it for youtube surfing and email -- he likes to play lots of youtube music videos, and with the 15" screen, he can sit at his drum set and play along with whatever group he has on the screen.

Christmas was easy for me this year -- each of my three boys received SSD's from Santa (however, my oldest Son has gone to the 'dark side' -- put his Santa SSD in his MAC

I "snagged" a real oldie just before Xmas, an IBM :santa: TransNote :santa:
It came all in bits and pieces, but it was superbly packed.
It's only missing the stylus. It was password locked, but I like challenges
I have it assembled and up and running already. Waiting for some backup-batteries, then I can update the BIOS and install an OS, Windows FLP is the most likely candidate.
This TransNote has a production date of 01/01 and is now the oldest TP I have.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

A 15" screen is indeed great for watching videos! Sorry to hear about your son going to the "dark side"

I had gotten a ThinkPad x41 tablet for christmas. :D Mostly to replace my old laptop. Which had problems with the screen.(original screen was cracked, and replacement screen wasnt fully compatible) My partner owns an x200 tablet(if i recall correctly) so that's why i got interested in thinkpads and decided to get one.(unfortunately anything newer than the x41 tablet is out of my price range)

I've given myself a "new" "T4-kenstein" to replace the now ancient T30 which was gradually falling apart.

Repaired a T40 board I had lying around (one less for the Board Room - sorry RBS!) and found a screen I never knew I had, and mated that with a 1.7Dothan and 1G RAM. Installed with the latest Ubuntu 10.10 it's a flyer.

Nope no joy, I had a birthday over the period as well but no onw, I said no one bought me a ThinkPad. I have been researching the types of ThinkPads over the past couple of weeks and still do not know which one to get. I keep seeing the advert for a T410 as it is Number One I believe or ThinkPad Edge. I will need to save some pennies.

Edge? That isn't a real Thinkpad!

I did not get a new Thinkpad for Christmas. I hope to build up an R60 w/flexview screen this Spring. If by some miracle I come into a nice sum of money I'd like to get me an X-series Thinkpad! The T400 I have is awesome but with my school books it gets to the point where even my cosmetics seem to add weight!

Geez that lip gloss and my powder are just something else! lol.

I like a little make up so I need to work on getting an X-series for sure! Happy New Years or New Years Eve where ever you are people

I would say that your oldest son has seen the light.

aisafish -- "I would say that your oldest son has seen the light."

My oldest son wants me to 'convert' -- he did convert me to the iPhone, mostly because it is so easy to use, even this senior citizen has no problem using all it's functions. As it stands now, we both enjoy banging on each other about whose machine is best -- neither one of us will admit to any shortcomings -- I think we both just like the verbal game :)
