Re: What web browser do you use? (poll)
Anyone using Firefox 4.0, fyi Firefox 5.0 was released.
I think its a bit faster than 4.0, but nothing changed in the looks.

Heh. I currently have 55 tabs open, and FF7's about:memory reports 457MB.
If you're looking for speed, I'd go Firefox Nightly; I think they crammed in the new Azure rendering engine, which is supposed to replace Cairo for the most part.
Also, according to arewefastyet.com, TypeInference is giving Crankshaft a run for it's money, and IonMonkey is supposed to be better. Go Mozilla!
Not sure what they're getting out of adopting the faster development schedule, though. More numbers in less time.

Downloaded Nightly now, and it does seem slightly quicker to load pages. Lastpass auto-fills things quicker too. I'll admit that I did change the icon and name of the shortcut to the standard boring old "Mozilla Firefox".
I agree with you about the version numbers. What's the point? Really it's just to show off a bigger number, which appeals to people who haven't "been there, done that." Google Chrome was released in September of 2008 and its on version 12. Firefox was released in November of 2004, and it just made version 5. The bigger number doesn't mean Chrome is more up to date or something.

Agreed. Numbers mean nothing. And still I maintain that Firefox has gone to pot since version 2.hunterman223 wrote:I agree with you about the version numbers. What's the point? Really it's just to show off a bigger number,

It also messes with corporation's approval systems; IBM just approved FF4, and FF4 is about to be abandoned.hunterman223 wrote:I agree with you about the version numbers. What's the point? Really it's just to show off a bigger number
I remember FF1 and FF2; they were really slow to load. FF3 was eh. Kinda skipped most of it by using Minefield/Nightly.automobus wrote:Agreed. Numbers mean nothing. And still I maintain that Firefox has gone to pot since version 2.

I was just using chrome and it I was playing monopoly online. I had a very good spot, and it crashed! I left chrome and went to firefox 5, but it was kinda slow to start and it still uses a lot of RAM. So, what the heck, I will try ie8. So I did. I really isn't that bad after all, been using it all day! No crashes, not too RAM hungry. I don't know why people hate it so much.

IE9 is pretty good this time, but I don't like it's interface.
Everyone has yet to move to the JetPack addon platform, so things still load slowly if you're bogged down by a pile of addons.

Adblock Plus & NoScript... afaik not for IE... I wouldn't browse the web without em. Then there are the others that make the web nice... like Greasemonkeyccookie66 wrote:I don't know why people hate it so much.

I am using FF5 now. For the longest time I used 3.4x or whatever it was.....I was very used to the format so at first I did not like the newer versions at all. Call me oldschool, but I personally dislike the minimalist format that all the browsers seem to be taking. All of my displays are 4:3 so I have plenty of vertical space.....and intend to keep it that way for as long as I can.ccookie66 wrote:Anyone using Firefox 4.0, fyi Firefox 5.0 was released.I think its a bit faster than 4.0, but nothing changed in the looks.
But anyway, then I figured out how to customize....got my Menu Bar back, put the tabs back where they belong, and most importantly moved the Reload/Stop & Home buttons back where they belong. I was really upset with those being relocated. Now that things are straightened up, I actually like the FF5 pretty well. Seems quick and stable to me.
Here is an article on how to fix FF4/5:
