Displays with RGB LED backlight prone to "rainbow effect" ?

#1 Post by Puppy » Tue Mar 01, 2011 4:52 am

It seems as getting a decent display will be more and more difficult :-) I've just read a HP EliteBook 8540w review (link here but non-english language) which states that the IPS display is nice but some reviewers have noticed the "rainbow effect" known from single-chip DLP projectors.

The effect is supposed to be caused by the RGB LED backlight because of poor individual R/G/B backlight component phase driving. As usually some people does not notice the effect at all while some others find it very disturbing (similar to the cheap DLP).

I didn't have chance to see the display in real but since I found the rainbow effect very disturbing on cheap DLPs I think it will be the same story.

Any experiences ?
