Please recommend a VERY light browser for XP environment

#1 Post by ajkula66 » Mon Apr 04, 2011 9:15 pm

First and foremost, I'm NOT trying to start a browser war here.

Guess I'm bored and trying to make an ultimate "extralight" XP setup.

Missing a browser that would fit that description.

Let's play, fellow TPF members... :D

I know nothing about these:
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/
Based off of Fire Fox
http://www.google.com/chrome/index.html?hl=es
There is Google Chrome
http://www.flock.com/
Flock is also based on Fire Fox

Some thoughts

Flock is *not* lightweight at all. It's heavier than Firefox.

I'd have to say either K-Meleon or Opera, leaning towards the latter. Opera's got great performance on older machines, but I'm not sure how well the current version would perform on something more than, say, 6 years old.

What sort of hardware are you dealing with?

kmeleon has worked very well for me, I used it on an old dell laptop with 2000. Opera works best (IMHO) for windows 98, where firefox and other newer browsers aren't compatible.

It's the 2003 T40p that I'm using as a "home away from home" machine, slightly upgraded (Dothan 735 CPU, newer HDD) and I'm trying to create the ultimate "light" XP environment on it, without maxing out the hardware end. The machine spends most of its life in surroundings where other stuff has grown legs before, so an inexpensive yet decent ThinkPad is a must... 8)

Kmeleon has been downloaded last night, and is being tested as I write...more to follow...looks good so far.

Many thanks to everyone for their suggestions, will keep you posted on which browser ends up as the winner.

I have Chrome on my T20 and T22 running Windows FLP and it works perfectly and you can run the latest beta version of it too. Youtube performs the best with Chrome on older machines in my opinion.

Yep, I had Chrome on it and it's nowhere as lightweight as most people presume it to be, especially not with a dozen tabs open which is my norm, more or less...also, this machine never goes on YouTube... :D ...thanks for the recommendation, though... :thumbs-UP:

I like it so far, quite a lot. We'll see how it behaves in the longer run.

I checked out the kmeleon website and while I'm sure it's definitely a lot lighter on the computer than Chrome, I didn't like the way it looked. I'm a huge fan of Chrome's interface and I don't think I could get used to the way Firefox used to look again. It gives me the impression that I'm on my new Thinkpad, when really I'm just on a ten year old A21m, like I am right now 8)

Snake oil. It's just Firefox built with some different compiler flags. There are tons of similar builds. They're not usually measurably different than Firefox.

Sorry if I just killed off any placebo effect. :P
