Kudos to WDC's warranty department
Kudos to WDC's warranty department
Just thought I'd mention a good experience with a hardware warranty, for once. I stripped out a laptop a few months ago (junker bought on CL) and it came with a WDC Scorpio Blue 320GB hard drive. Started coughing up bad sectors as soon as I tried to use it, so I set up an RMA with the company. I mailed the drive to them on Saturday (2nd) and tomorrow will be receiving a Scorpio Black 500GB in exchange. And this is via the regular RMA, not having them expedite anything.
That's some pretty good service.

While I've never had a WD drive of mine fail, I have exchanged a few on systems that I've fixed, and I too have always had pleasant experiences with their warranty department. Of course there are always exceptions, but I've found their performance to be vastly better than some of their competitors'... (a certain three-letter SSD maker comes to mind...

That makes me worry. I'm using an OCZ as the boot drive in my desktop.ThinkRob wrote:While I've never had a WD drive of mine fail, I have exchanged a few on systems that I've fixed, and I too have always had pleasant experiences with their warranty department. I've had a few OCZ SSDs. I've got three right now as boot drives in desktops. I've never had a problem with any of them. I always have got my rebates too, though speedy they were not.
The thing I like about WD support is if you give them your credit card number, they'll send you a drive immediately, then you have 30 days to send back the old drive. Plus you can use the packaging from the new one to ship the old one. It really cuts down on the down time. They do two day shipping and you can send it back parcel post, which is usually the cheapest.

I wouldn't worry too much. I made the mistake of buying a SandForce-based drive (instead of one based on a more proven, reliability-oriented controller). I have since used some of their other products and have had no problems. My issue wasn't with the tech as much as it was the company.Reboot wrote: That makes me worry. Of course, you should always backup regardless of what drive you use...

Let me add a good word for WD.
I had a 500G Black for my TP go bad. I had no difficulty with warranty persons; they were polite and knowledgeable. Usually they want a CC if they are to send a replacement BEFORE receiving the defective drive. They waived that requirement and sent me a ONE T black as the replacement for my 500G and then I sent them the defective. That's what I call customer SERVICE.
