Thinkpad Stuff in Singapore? Need guidance!

Hi Thinkpadders

I'll be two weeks in Singapore by end of July. Any hint where to get good Thinkpad stuff there? I'll be looking for either used (older) notebooks or spare parts for the TP's in my sig. I googled a bit and got a couple of names like Sim Lim Square, Funan Mall, Paris Silk and so on... But they seem to be more focused on consumer electronics, I'm not sure if they will sell Thinkpad related parts.

Any help or hint will be welcome! I'm sure there will be some Singapore forum members around here or members that were there already.

Well, for the moment I don't "really" need anything specific. But I was thinking in stocking some batteries for my X60 and/or X41T, getting a new palmrest for my T61 or maybe just look for some geek weird stuff.

I'm on a business trip actually but I hope I have some time on the weekend to go and browse through some shops.

I'm not so sure Singapore is a great place to buy tech items. Last time I was there (on business), the prices seemed rather inflated what with import duties, VAT (or whatever they call it locally), etc. Great looking stores, but frightening prices.

I spent my spare weekend hours on Sentosa Island.

agree with u. they call it GST which actually can be refunded at airport. well not that cheap but still ok.

As it was once said to me regarding the price of beef in the Caribbean islands, "It didn't walk here."

Traditionally Hong Kong, and I guess now Shanghai might be interesting places to shop tech, but Singapore is not high on that list. It's been a long time since Tokyo had camera bargains to offer too, I believe.

I know Singapore may not be in the top three countries list for buying tech stuff, still as I'll be there I was curious about what could be available and I'm sure it will be more than what I can see here around Switzerland. Plus the swiss franc has got stronger during the last months and I may have a slight currency rate advantage...

Then shop carefully and know the market price. Just make sure you don't end up buying a $1000 suitcase to put all that swag into.

On a vacation trip to New Orleans, I bought so much stuff, I needed an extra suitcase for it. I bought a $30 El Cheapo Supremo suitcase that was damaged by baggage handling equipment on the return flight, but the contents survived, so it did its job.

Think I'm kidding about that $1000? Look here.

You can see them in Singapore here (been there), that is if you don't mind picking up your eyeballs off the floor later (done that).

Well, since I will looking for palmrest, XGA cables or batteries, I hope I'd need no extra luggage

In worst case I can throw away all the clothes from the bag, and in worst worst worst case I can throw away my crappy company Dell notebook to make some extra place

Man I love the way you prioritize!! I don't think I could throw out even a crappy machine, but clothes... shoot yea... only need what your wearing to get back

Well, keep things simple is my motto...

My checklist would be something like:

- Thinkpad related stuff? ==> Checked!
- Flight ticket? ==> Checked!
- Passport? ==> Checked!
- Wallet and iPhone in the pocket? ==> Checked!

Up we go! The rest can stay...

BTW, you can get hand-tailored shirts or a complete business suit in Singapore much cheaper than elsewhere. That's one thing that's fairly widespread in Asia. I would have that fairly high on my agenda. To H*ll with electronics, find me a good tailor!

Cool! I can then sit in my couch with my thinkpads dressed in a "Hugo Boss"-alike suit

Naahhhh... Better buy more Thinkpads
