Your first ThinkPad...

#1 Post by edikat » Thu Jul 07, 2011 1:17 pm

Back in 1997 I was working for MCI (SHL Systemhouse) in Victoria, BC and a guy had just gotten a new corporate laptop.

A beautiful 760XD with what was the first XGA display I'd ever seen.... it blew my mind. Never had I seen such an amazing piece of kit. I wanted one - instantly - but they were expensive. I don't know how much but I think they were $4000 USD?

Returning to the UK early 1998 I managed to purchase a newish 760XL (basically an 760XD with SVGA) for £1000 (approx. $2000 in those days) which took me on my ThinkPad journey.

So, the 760XL was my first TP - and it still rates as my most used (in number of hours...) one - I sold it in late 1999 due to the fact I was fiddling with a screwdriver under the bonnet and somehow managed to "lock" the disk - even though I'd never entered a password on it! So kept the disk and sold the 760XL only to then go onto the 770... another story though :)

OK, thanks I just saw this!

I guess it's something that comes up frequently :)

@edikat: There is a really good search facility on this website ... which is worth checking before starting a new thread. I'm not doing a waggy finger at you but just trying to help a new contributor. Welcome aboard. :)

Well, actually, the site's search capability is currently somewhat broken. I would use Google when trying to search for any information older than about three months ago (April 1, 2011). Enter whatever search words you are looking for and include:
