End of two great thinkers: Dennnis Ritchie and John McCarthy
End of two great thinkers: Dennnis Ritchie and John McCarthy
Dennis M Ritchie died just the other day. He is the original UNIX greybeard. He created UNIX and the C programming language, and they almost certainly will never be obsoleted or forgotten. By creating a language, a system of logic, Ritchie has given something useful to the world. I believe humankind will be coding in C forever.

Re: End of DMR—a SUPER THINKER—a greybeard
printer......Lol ...... trying so hard NOT TO EVEN think of days when I had to look after PDP-9 & 11 ...... dang @ my FIRST JOB after Graduating from SYD Uni and being so excited to get this job - Assistant to "IT Managing Directorr" and the HP/ IBM PDP-9 & 11. 100s of printers that would jam with HALF -SHADOW paper when those EOM reports were needed most. And the CEO (one of those POMMY's with 10 PHDs) would want to know the HP CEO phone number so he can call him in USA to send someone to fix THAT PRINTER - as i couldnt !!) Ahhhh ,,, those PAPER TAPES and those 20 inces Winchester Disk Drives - wow those could store a HUGEEEEEE amounts of data (20 floppy drives worth!)......dang those EARLY morning trips from Downtown Offices to Airport to get those DRIVES from the HULL of Qantas Aircrafts that just landed from LAX .....as NOONE was 'qualified enough' to handle them!!! .... WOW what memories !

John McCarthy has died
John McCarthy died just the other day. He is, one might say, the creator of modern artificial intelligence, having developed it so far beyond Alan Turing. He created the Lisp programming language. Lisp is not so plain and widely used as C, but it is a very important language, which I believe humankind will use forever. Likewise his writings and contributions, to artificial intelligence and computer science in general, almost certainly will never be obsoleted or forgotten.

Re: End of two great thinkers: Dennnis Ritchie and John McCarthy
lisp was part of the alpha microsystems OS/software package in the late 1970's..Lisp programming language
i always used alpha basic for my programming needs on my alpha micro computers..
it was a great basic prog language in that it had a lot of monitor calls to do most anything and more..
i never got into using LISP (or Alpha Lisp as they called it)..
and now back to your regular thread..
