Has anyone used X120e with GOBI 2000 to connect to Sprint 3G

#1 Post by rkforum » Fri Oct 21, 2011 8:33 pm

Hello

I did a search and didn't find any definitive answers so I thought I'd ask-

I ordered an X120E for my wife and selected the GOBI 2000 3G option- I noticed on the order it injected "AT&T SIM CARD" (although I did not select AT&T, it never gave me an option to select a vendor). I'd like to use SPRINT 3G since I already have an account.

I found this entry on the lenovo site which seems to indicate it can be done (it's from July 2011, pretty recent): http://support.lenovo.com/en_AE/downloa ... D=HT003962

has anybody tried this or been able to connect with Sprint?

Yes, the GOBI 2000 can connect to Sprint. Of the three officially supported carriers, only AT&T requires the SIM. Lenovo includes the SIM on many of the models, but you are not required to use it.

I have found that via Lenovo Access Connections, there is the option to connect to either AT&T, Verizon or Sprint. I suggest you try looking there. If you require additional software to access Sprint, I believe it can be downloaded from the Lenovo or Sprint website.

One note, all three offer day passes for $15 per day - no other contract/commitment required. Expensive, but you can literally switch between WWAN carriers as often as you like.

Some X100e and X120e with the Gobi card are only supposed to be activated on AT&T. This is done by software only.

My X100e (3508-2AU) only showed AT&T as available provider.

After searching on the Lenovo site I found the drivers and software that will allow activations from all 3 providers.

So even if your X120e is sold as an 'AT&T only' model, there is a way around it.

Unlimited data now applies only to Sprint handsets. It used to apply to aircards as well, but now they are limited to 5GB per month.

Still have UNLIMITED DATA .... as along as you had the SAME ACCOUNT from way back ,,,, AFAIK ; only NEW accounts - pple that sign up laterly get the bum-deal

Also ; FYI ,,,, anyone who has the SRPINT "dingle/Dongle" ... and use SPRINT CONNECTION MANAGER
...you can EITHER :
a) call sprint and give them your GSM SIM card IMEI #( one supplied by lenovo)
b) add the details on your CONNECTION MANAGER ,

and you set to USE! (( ofcause you have to have a valid account etc etc)

Sprint = now can see the GSM IMEI etc info to 'approve' that connection via SPRNT CONNECTION MANAGER - dont even have to CALL THEM - jsut setup info in "sprint connection manager" and you swet to go!!
((as this worked for me since 2010...))Hope this helps

Cheers

Folks

I figured I'd update this post since definitive info is hard to find

I bought a new X120e and have it working fine with Sprint 3g

I had to download

* Latest GOBI 2000 drivers
* Latest version of Access Connections (which did not come with my laptop)
* Latest Lenovo Mobile Broadband drivers

All from the Lenovo web site.

Once I did this in Access Connections it let you pick AT&T, Verizon or Sprint. I picked Sprint, and it then showed the MEID of the GOBI card. I then called Sprint to move existing account to this new MEID and it worked great! Sprint 3G working fine on my X120E.

My X120E came with an "AT&T SIM CARD", but as mentioned in the posts above that is just for AT&T and doesn't mean you can't use a different provider. Sprint doesnt' need a SIM card, so my AT&T SIM card is still in my laptop even though I am using sprint service.

and yes, I have unlimited Sprint data plan- I opened up the account with Sprint in 1997 and keep moving it to new devices. Nothing like unlimited 3G data for $50/month!

Thanks for everone's replies below.

Great that you got it working. Can you describe the quality and speed of the connections you are getting with the Sprint 3G?
