x130e at Microcenter for $139?
Microcenter has refurb x130e units for $139. They come with 4GB RAM and a 320GB HDD, although I have an extra 4GB SODIMM and a 256GB SSD I can put in it. With those upgrades, how would this unit perform? Can it play youtube videos? Run VM's in VMWare workstation?

Check the processor first-- IIRC these can have either AMD E-series or ULV Core i3 CPUs (Gen 2 Sandy Bridge).ThorOfAsgard wrote: ↑Tue Sep 11, 2018 5:57 amMicrocenter has refurb x130e units for $139. Youtube videos shouldn't be a problem, though VMs might be a problem due to the low CPU speed. The i3 lacks Turbo boost and is stuck at 1.4GHz, while the AMD E-series are netbook-grade CPUs. :O
They're only suitable for light tasks, IMO.

Based from https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-E-Ser ... 138.0.html, I'd say it's a pretty slow processor. I don't recommend it for running VMs.
Youtube will run fine if:
- the web browser supports GPU-based video decoding
- the video codec is H.264/AVC (probably up to 1920x1080) --> the built-in graphics don't have support for VP8 and VP9.

Those things are meant for school kids.
For that money I'll sell you a T400 or R400 incl. shipping!

If you only want an 11" 768p netbook of some sort I believe they are quite cheap and common.
Be that as it may I wouldnt be doing any intensive tasks on one... hell I have a HP 2570p 12" with 8Gb 240gb ssd and your usual i5 3rd gen cpu and it is a capable machine but its not going to do everything.
A good example is the Dell Inspiron 11 which my kid uses... Pentium n3710 quad, single channel 4gb 120gb ssd - this is also and ok unit but I would think even if you over invested with 8Gb ram its not going to be able to utilise the resources smoothly.
I think maybe 6 yrs ago the x130e was common at schools and its just a single core with HT cpu so its really not good for much even with a 4gb model and an ssd.
The choke point is the cpu.
