Issues Installing Updated ATI Catalyst Drivers

Thanks to the links provided by ug-02 I've been able to successfully install the latest Catalyst drivers (10-5) without the need for Mobility Modder. Just simply run the .exe file for your particular version of windows and let the install do the rest.

In order to take advantage of flash hardware acceleration included with Flash 10.1 http://labs.adobe.com/ I went to the ATI site and downloaded the latest version of the Catalyst display drivers (I downloaded the separate display drivers as there is a combined download that includes the catalyst control center).

After running the the executable it unpacked the contents into a directory on c:\ATI\Support\10-5_vista64_win7_64_dd (note that this will be different if using 32-bit drivers). I canceled the rest of the installation at this point.

I then dowloaded the ATI Mobility Modder @ http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool.php Running the Mobility Modder, I pointed it to the directory stated above and it proceeded to modify the drivers.

Going into Device manager >> Expanding Display Adapters >> Double Clicking "ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics" >> Going to the "Driver" tab and clicking on "Update Driver".

From the next "How do you want to search for driver software?" window I choose "Browse my computer for drivers software." I then chose the "Let me pick for a list of device drivers on my computer" option. From the next screen I clicked the "Have Disk..." option which I entered the location as "C:\ATI\Support\10-5_vista64_win7_64_dd\Packages\Drivers\display\W76A_INF". Reading other posts on the subject, there are notes that either of the 2 .INF files will work (in this case I tried each in 2 attempts).

After going through this, you will see 2 different models both with the same name of "ATI RADEON HD 3200 Graphics". Double clicking on either one of them will initiate the driver installation. Shortly a "Window's can't verify the publisher of this driver software" message will appear which I choose to install the driver anyway.

After that I get the following error message:

"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.

ATI RADEON HD 3200 Graphics

A Service Installation section in this INF is invalid"

I'm using Windows Pro 64-bit. Does anyone else have this issue? It seems that the Win 7 32-bit users aren't having the problem.

What you did seem correct.

Just a note. Have you disabled the UAC before patching the drivers, as suggested by MM ? I don't know if it is mandatory in win seven, but I think worth trying.

I haven't installed the 10.5 drivers so far, so it's possible that MM can't patch correctly that version, if nothing helps try the 10.4 ones.

I'm assuming you meant Windows Vista Pro right?
Btw, I just used the installer and didn't go through the device manager after I modded them.

Update, I just tried to install the 10.5 release on seven 64.

No luck, same error as you report about the missing section on the inf.

So I presume that some slight changes on the 10.5 are leading MM to do an incorrect patching process.

Go with the 10.4 for now.

I try to investigate on what is wrong on the 10.5.

@Control: I'm using Win 7 Pro 64-bit. Taking your suggestion, I attempted to use the installer executable that was packaged with the driver and it came up with an error/failure as well.

Just an update to the situation.

Dowloaded the 10.4 drivers and had the same situation occur. I'm guessing its an issue with the current version of Mobility Modder, so I'll wait for an update on that end, or hope that Lenovo puts out newer, updated drivers.

The uac is fully disabled only after a reboot.

Disabling the uac (here) is not meant to correctly install the patched drivers, but to correctly patch the drivers.

So the correct sequence should be:

Disable UAC > reboot > unpack the drivers > patch them > install the ccc > install the the drivers > reenable UAC > reboot

I made sure in 2 instances before patching the drivers with Mobility Modder that UAC was turned off and that I had rebooted after I turned UAC off. Are there 2 different vesions of Mobility Modder that I'm not aware of? The one I'm downloading and installing is installing to the Program Files (x86) directory which makes me believe that its written for 32-bit systems and only available to modify the 32-bit drivers.

Where can I find the older 10.4 version on the web? Can't find it anywhere. I'll be getting my X100e next week and I'll need this as well since I will immediately install 64-bit Win7.

I had to do a bit of searching but found the combined (Catalyst Control Center + Display Driver) package here: http://www.guru3d.com/news/ati-catalyst ... ivers-out/

After the contents are extracted to your local hard drive you should find the display drivers under
C:\ATI\Support\10-4_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Packages\Drivers\Display

If this works for you without an issue, please post back.

I downloaded the 10.4 Driver+CCC from Sofpedia and followed Mobility Modder instruction but getting the same error. Using the buildin installer I can finish the install but the log says driver install fails, and when I restart I'll get the "EXT_framebuffer_object extension was not found" error for atibemon.exe. It took me the better part of the day to get the system back to normal, almost caused me a reinstall of 7.

Can you guys confirm that modded 10.4 works here, and please post the steps you took to get it working.

I guess I just answered my own question, I end up downloading the generic Catalyst driver from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/w ... 12&ostype=

then manually installed it in device manager and it worked like a charm.

Now I have Driver 8.732 and Catalyst 10.5 installed, along with Flash 10.1 RC7 hardware acceleration works great. 1080p Youtube is really smooth and CPU usage is only around 50%.

I restart I'll get the "EXT_framebuffer_object extension was not found" error for atibemon.exe

This happens if you have a mixed configuration, 10.4 CCC, 9.6 driver.

I see, it makes sense because I used the included installer, which successfully installed 10.4CCC but failed to install the newer driver, and problems started to occur right after that.

Thanks for the links! I was finally able to install the updated drivers both without having to use Mobility Modder or manually update the drivers. The install updated both the Catalyst Control Center and the Display Drivers without any issues.

The newer drivers, while not only more efficient, also allow for smoother playback of Flash HD video when combined with Flash 10.1 available at http://labs.adobe.com/. It offloads some of the processing onto your video card instead of being completely CPU reliant. Smooth, non-jerky 1080p Flash is now possible. Even for 720p and lower resolutions, your CPU usage will decrease resulting in an overall quieter and cooler system.

Thanks for the great response, but I've been following along with the same issues you've had. I was wondering why this version seems to work while the other 10-4 and 10-5 did not?

By the way, using this version and flash 10.1 beta, I have smooth 720p on youtube, and much improved 1080p - but still dropping frames every 3 or 4 second. Same for you?

No idea why the version listed in the links works as compared to the other versions. I'm guessing that even though its catalyst 10-5, it would be slightly revised compared to the the other versions of 10-5.

As for dropped frames, it will do so if I'm skipping about the video, but given a few seconds it goes back to relatively smooth playback (it does appear to jerk a little but thats only if I'm really looking). However, you have to consider that in addition to your computer decoding the video in 1080, which is eating up processing cycles, it still has to scale it to whatever size your are actually viewing it at, either in your browser at 640x270 (something like that) or the 1366x768 native resolution of your laptop display, eating up more cycles.

In most circumstances with flash however, I generally download the file and play it back from my hard drive rather than from a browser. It allows me more options in regards to size and since its not being played in a web browser under flash I end up with significantly less cpu usage because of it.

They are aimed to the mobile market.

Until 10.4 ati was redirecting any mobile related request to the producer site, now ATI has switched his policy, and only Toshiba, Sony or Panasonic owners are forced to use mobility modder, all other brands are now (also) supported directly from ati.

You are absolutely correct, Option 2 downloads the 10.6 full installer.

Right. It did not work for me. In fact, the notebook went blank first and I had to hard-reset. Then, showed up alert messages at bootup again. Finally had to use system restore!

This happens if you have the new ccc and the old driver, so you have to install the new drivers 10.4/10.5/10.6 or uninstall the catalyst control center and reinstall the old 9.6 one.

Just use the direct links posted by steinAK (the page I linked above, is changed).
