Lid Close Antics?

Hey guys. Unlike some, I prefer to have my laptop set to do nothing (other than obviously switch off the LCD) when I close the lid. It's helpful when I want to move around the house or my classroom. Unfortunately, I've also noticed that if the display automatically dims (which I have it set to) or the idle time passes for when the display should automatically turn off when the lid is already closed, I'll open my lid to a blank screen and no amount of key presses will get it to turn on again. I have to close it and open it again to get it to come on again. Really annoying.

I have a virgin install of Win 7 Home Premium, but am using the latest Thinkvantage power software, have (to my knowledge) the latest BIOS, and power drivers directly from Lenovo's site. Any ideas? Thanks again.

When you say a blank screen do you mean the backlight is off also? Or is the screen just black? Does the hdd access light flash every now and then while this is happening? The hdd light is a cylinder with arrows on it. Also, try checking the event viewer "system" section for anything unusual after this happens.

There is no HDD access light on an X100e.

I was about to say, if you can find a disk access light, you would make my day. Don't know why Lenovo omitted this feature. But yes, what I mean by a blank screen is that the backlight is off, the screen is completely dark.

Really? Strange they would remove that. Is there anything unusual in the event viewer? When you first open it up try using a flash light to see if there is anything on the screen, like your desktop. It could just be something to do with the bios, so you could see if there is an option in there that pertains to the backlight.

Seriously though, guys. Anyone else notice strange behavior with regard to the lid closing? Another thing it will do is flash the screen briefly as the lid is being opened, then go dark for a split second, then go back on. I don't think this is a hardware issue, but will try and verify it in Ubuntu or some other live OS.

I've occasionally noticed some things similar to what you report, but those also might be related to the "instant resume" I have on that inhibits the normal sleep behavior. I'll try to pay more attention and see if I notice any patterns.

Chiming in on this thread because of lid open antics.

I've noticed that my X100e (dc625,3gb,noWWAN,original Win7) does not correctly manage power sources when it comes to the display (and possibly other under-the-hood power saving).

If I close the lid (sleep) while on battery, then plug in AC/mains, then open the lid (awake) the X100e will remain in 'Battery Mode' - or at least not allow ANY change of screen brightness (on-screen display pops up but no +/-).

If I close the lid (sleep) while on AC/mains, then unplug the AC power, then open the lid (awake) the X100e will remain in 'AC/Charging Mode' - or at least not allow ANY change of screen brightness (on-screen display pops up but no +/-).

This continues to be frustrating because in the morning, I'll grab the Thinkpad from the charger and start reading the news only to find my battery time is rapidly disappearing and I can't reduce consumption with the function keys OR the Lenovo Power Manager.

The only way to fix it is to put the device to sleep again and then reawaken.

I have also had times when, resuming from sleep, the screen backlight comes on but the screen remains black. The only solution is another sleep cycle.

If I can't resolve this behavior, I'm likely to request a repair/replacement as putting this device to sleep/awakening twice as much as usual is not acceptable for me. I love everything else about it so it is frustrating to have to create workarounds in order to use the netbook in an expected manner.

Suggestions?

for actions, I set lid closure to "do nothing" on both battery and AC. So I set sleep and hibernate using Fn keys. try that.

going back again, I do have the same problem in that if you resume set hibernation on AC, then unhibernate on battery, the LED adjustment is not possible. But closing the LED lid and then open again is fine. On my settings, my lid closure doesn't do anything. so close/reopen the lid doesn't take much extra time. It is annoying though. I suspect it's a driver problem, not hardware pre se. hope lenovo will release a fix for this.

Everyone in this thread is running the latest BIOS right? I see a bunch of power management and battery issues fixed in those released BIOS versions. There was a new video driver released on 7/2 as well.

I'm running BIOS 1.25. I've updated everything else. The only diff is having catalyst 1.6 video driver. I don't think that's the issue though. I've got another x100e not yet opened in box, can try it later.

Ah, try the Lenovo video driver. It is definitely tweaked for power management.

Back again after a while, and noticing the same stuff as Jamito too. At first I thought it was a faulty lid switch, but in Linux and before bootup it turns on and off smoothly, so it must be a problem with the OS. I'm half-tempted to just gut Lenovo's PM drivers out and let Win7 handle it. I think the PM on this computer is a bit overengineered to compensate for conspicuously bad battery life. I'm pretty sure I'm also running 1.25 and the latest video drivers.

Once I opened the lid and the screen remained dim until I closed it and opened it several more times I'm thinking of contacting Lenovo, but I'm positive this is a software issue, and not a problem with the HW.
