Will this update cure my X100e from locking up?

The last several weeks my X100e has suffered from almost daily freezes or lock ups - the last time, when I tried to erase Internet Explorer's cookies. The only thing that works when this happens, is a long push on the power button.

Just installed an optional reliability update Update for Windows 7 (KB2488113):

An application that uses Direct2D or Direct3D may crash in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Will this solve this problem?

I guess not. Just a few hours after installing this update as well as the Win7 SP1, my X100e froze as I pressed the OK button to delete Internet Explorer's cookies.

I wonder if Lenovo or Microsoft will come up with a solution. Last time it locked up when I checked the settings in the battery tab of the Thinkvantage Power Manager 3.40 as I pressed the cancel button.

I've never had these problems on my older Thinkpads. But then, they were designed by IBM, and are still working fine today.

Are you running the preload Windows 7?

I'm running a retail copy of Windows 7 that I've now updated to SP1 with no issues. Most Lenovo drivers were installed.

Running preload win7 pro with all of the updates from microsoft and lenovo.

Just as I thought that the problem had gone away after three days of stability, my X100e froze while surfing and watching streaming videos.

If it happens again, I guess I'll recover the system and start all over.

Might be worth a shot, but in my (limited) experience those random stalls are often caused by faulty hardware. Run MemTest86+ to make sure there are no errors in your RAM, and run some kind of hard drive test to look for bad or damaged sectors. Either of those can cause lack-ups like you are having. Just running some tests can either point you to the cause, or eliminate a few possibilities.

Thanks for your advice. I did once have a desktop where the main memory chips were effected by ambient heat... but it was relatively easy to diagnose with the BSOD.

I've run some of Lenovo's Thinkvantage stress tests - so far OK. I will try memtest86+ tonite.

Somehow, I suspect that the problem is either causes by certain sites or an Internet Explorer 8 or Flash Player bug.

I'll post again when I know more.

Just completed 6 passes of Memtest86+ successfully.

Are there any good diagnostics for the graphics chip other than Thinkvantage Tools?

Well, it looks like it was a software problem after all. After quite a few MS Win7 updates, including Internet Explorer 9, everything is rock stable now.

BTW the first thing IE9 showed me, was just how much delay each add-on or plug in was causing. Turned out that by switching most of them off I could save 0.8 sec. As a result the whole surfing experience has changed, it feels light and fast, and the processor doesn't seem to "sweat" as much.
