380Z boots and stays at splash screen (help!)

#1 Post by CrazyTPFan » Fri Jan 10, 2020 3:30 pm

I just got my ThinkPad 380Z, and it boots and stays at the ThinkPad screen and won’t go into an OS. I've tried everything I could think of and it still won't boot into a OS. Any help is appreciated.

Have you checked you have a hdd? Is there an OS on the hdd? What operating system? Win95? Have you tried booting with a boot disk?

I’ve already tried booting with a boot disk and it won’t do anything. It won’t boot off the HDD either.

This isn't supposed to seem crappy, but what happened to it works perfectly from your previous post?

I had just bought it from eBay. The listing only said that it had error 163 and 161, which is for the cmos battery.

Okay, so you fixed that and now it won't boot to an OS. Have you tried booting in to the BIOS?

I didn't replace the cmos yet. It won't boot into the BIOS no matter how many times I press F1.

When the error codes show up, what do you do?

When I get 161 and 163, I click ok and set the date and time. It will reboot and go to the splash screen that I can't get past.

When it reboots, try holding down the f1 key and keep it held down into the splash screen. Also, does the booting show any memory?

Booting shows memory. I shut the laptop off, held F1 and turned it on and nothing happened.

This time, go through the process of clearing the error, then when it reboots press down the f1 key..

It will take long time at post with dead cmos battery. Once replaced still same till settings are set and saved, then next reboots will be much quicker.

Wait long than usual get in bios with F1 then set time and date then save, then let it start up, don't power down, let it boot like this, it willl boot. I have few thinkpads with dead cmos battery this way and did fine using them.

Cheers,

Just to let you know, the older Thinkpads have a different looking BIOS, https://near-unix.blogspot.com/2013/07/ ... 380xd.html (just posting for the Pics). Once in, you will be able to direct the BIOS to self test the components. BTW, I just went through two 385ED Thinkpads Replaced system board in one hdd and CD Drive in another, and while they are a little tedious, they are probably easier than other Laptops (fewer screws) but the plastic if very brittle so handle with care. The manuals are pretty useful, and will show you what screws to remove and how they comes apart https://www.manualslib.com/manual/75371 ... -380z.html. Fortunately like the 380xd linked, you can get to the hdd of your 380z without disassembling the laptop, with the 385ed you have to remove the top bezel and cd drive to get to the hdd.
