Came across my first ThinkPad the other day, a 760C. Switched on and it came with a picture of a floppy disk and some arrows motioning at F1.
What can I do to get it going?

Re: Startup diskette for a 760C
Diskette animation means that the system did not find any bootable operating system. Assuming that the 760C still has a hard drive inside, then it's possibly dead. Could also mean that the BIOS is not looking at it. Assuming that the Ultrabay has the floppy drive inside, I'd try booting any diskette which has an OS on it; usually a DOS boot disk or could even be a diagnostic program of some kind (e.g., a bootable floppy containing memtest86+).

Re: Startup diskette for a 760C
Thanks, I have numerous bootable hard drives that I have tested on other ThinkPads, but will try again, I also have a PC-DOS 3.30 boot diskette somewhere.... Now where did I put it? I kind of expected it to beep and require the time to be set like on other ThinkPads where the BIOS battery has warn out. Does the 760C not have such a thing?rkawakami wrote: ↑Sun May 16, 2021 4:46 pmDiskette animation means that the system did not find any bootable operating system. Re: Startup diskette for a 760C
Your 760C does indeed have a BIOS back-up battery.
If the system did not beep on start-up or require a time/date to be reset, then:
1. The original battery is still functioning, or
2. It has already been replaced by a previous owner.
If your DOS installation disk is good, then the system will read it and bypass/eliminate the up-arrow/F1/no-boot situation.
Regards.
