IBM 600x 2645-8EU

"The device isn't using any resources because it is not currently enabled."

I've tried setting the IRQs manually and rebooting but alas, the yellow exclamation points are still present beside the Infrared, Com and Printer entries in the Device Manager.

Furthermore, under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, there are two entries of,

Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller
Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller

What's this supposed to mean? Thanks!

These are two separate issues. One is an operating system installation problem or a hardware problem. The second one is not a problem at all, but just the way Windows installs on the 600X.

I'm not sure because I haven't seen this specific set of yellow exclamation points before, but in general, this error occurs because something went wrong during installation of your operating system. When I saw your errors, I assumed you had Windows 98SE, but that can't be right because the entries in Device Manager are wrong. If you had Windows 98/98SE, as a first step, I would recommend removing the Infrared, COM and Printer entries from Device Manager (remove them all in one step, before rebooting). Then you could reboot and see if Windows is able to "find" all the hardware correctly and re-install support for it automatically. But I can't recommend anything without knowing which operating system you are using, and if you're not using Windows 98/98SE, then I'm probably not the best source of information (!).

Other possibilities that come to mind include fiddling with your settings in the IBM ThinkPad Configuration Utility, or running tests to see if your ThinkPad believes that these pieces of hardware are properly functional or not. But I would normally start with removing from Device Manager as that is the easiest thing to do.

This is very similar to what shows up normally in a standard installation of Windows 98/98SE:

There is probably no need to worry about it no matter which OS you are using -- this apparently duplicate entry is probably normal.

Some versions of Windows on the 600X have an issue if you enable the serial port, modem and IR all at the same time. I suggest you disable the hardware you're not using... or use a different OS.

Disabling unused hardware will also extend your battery life.

On the 600X, and most other Thinkpads of that era, the IR port is assigned COM1 by default.

Try turning OFF the IR, then install whatever device you want to use COM1, then turn the IR on again and it will find and use whatever COM port is available.
