Thinkpad 600E ram and processor upgrade

#1 Post by CKTWY » Mon Apr 11, 2005 10:10 am

Just want to check if my assumptions are correct.
I have TP 600E model 2645-5AU, in which some problem arouse and my friend gave me a 2645-5BU...
2645-5AU
I have read on the forum that only low-density 256mb pc100 ram will work to upgrade both of these models. When I told my friend, he insists that the pc133 are backwards compatible, but since this is my laptop we're talking about, just want to make sure.
I have found that the number for the 256mb pc100 I should look up is 33L3069? any other cheaper alternatives?
Also, the 5AU screen is giving off a slight purplish/pinkish hue, is that a problem?
I have also read the possibility of upgrading the 5AUs processor. I found that the number to find is 10L1333? Or if there are any other pentium processor suggestions?

2645-5BU
both laptops always prompt not enough memory...
Only the right speaker works on this one, replace with 02k4897?
Also, the mouse pointer when set to the track point always goes Southeast...replace keyboard 02k4785?

Thank you

B

Your friend is wrong! You must use lo-density memory, either PC100 or PC133, but there's very little PC133 lo-density memory available and they're relatively rare.

IBM memory part number to look for is 33L3070.

A pinkish hue to the display usually means that the backlight is failing. But the unit can continue to operate with the pinkish hue literally for a year or more.

Max processor upgrade for the 5AU is a PII 400MHz, hardly worth the effort.

WRT the 5BU, check the speaker connections. Get the HMM for your machine and open it up.

Yes the wandering Trackpoint means you need a new keyboard.

Thank you for your help James.

I am currently running Win2k on both laptops. After upgrading the memory, would installing WinXP pro instead be feasible?

On a side note, do you know the max memory capacity of a TP i 1200 1161-43u?

Thank you

B

You could install XP on either 600E with more RAM, but I personally prefer W2K for these machines.

WRT the i1200, IIRC the max RAM is 192MB.
