Turn off beep ?

In "Sounds & Multimedia" in C. panel of my 600e , the sound is turned off. Yet when I press Fn-PgUp to adjust the volume through the speakers (etc) there is a very loud annoying beep. Is this on the Mobo ? Some small speaker like what gives the post beeps when it boots up etc. ?
Is there anyway I can tone this down or turn it off except dismantling the laptop and muffling it with some chewing gum or something ?
Thanks,
Chris.

I think the setting is in the bios, but it has been a while since I had a 600 so I may be wrong. Press F1 when prompted during boot to access the bios.

The sound is coming from the 2 speakers not from some mini onboard speaker as I had thought. I don't see any audio controls/configs in BIOS apart from an 'audio test '.
Even with the Master Control muted it is still beeping. Also when I was in BIOS, every key touched beeped. Guess I'll just use the volume control in the task bar instead.
Cheers,
Chris.

The sound is generated by the BIOS... and you can change the volume with Fn+PgUp or PgDn as you have found.
You can disable that beep with IBM's Configuration tool.

You can also control that beep from the power management settings (at least, you can under 98SE). There are two other beeps you can control form there as well: Lid shut and POST (not necessarily the exact names, but the gist is there).

Under Power Management in IBM Configuration menu, there are only alarms for low battery.... In the same IBM config. under 'accessibility' are options to convert audio warnings to visual.... same place, under 'audio' is a 'disable volume control beep' ... Bingo! I said , but no luck ... its still beeping with FnUp and now ALSO when the mouse is used on the volume control icon on the task bar.... its really annoying me.
Chris.
PS: Fixed ! (By accident) I disabled the sound completly and rebooted
and it wouldnt even play music. Then I re-enabled and rebooted and its fine now, no beeping. I guess the old girl just needed a wake up call.
Thanks to all.
Chris.
