Voice recognition

#1 Post by jsuebersax » Fri Apr 22, 2005 11:31 am

I'd like some way to dictate and possibly edit text in MS Word by speech. Possible software is IBM Via Voice. It requires:
  • * PII 266 MHz with MMX
    * 256K L cache or equivalent (including AMD-K6 with 256K L2 cache)
    * 64MB RAM (for W98)
    * W98 compatible 16-bit sound card with a microphone jack
    * 4X CD-ROM
As best I can tell, my 600 (2645-51U) running W98SE has:
  • * PII 266MHz
    * 512KB L2 Cache
    * 160MB RAM
    * 24X or 10X CD ROM
Questions:

1. What is MMX (and does my system likely have it)?
2. Does my cache meets the requirements?
3. I guess I'll need a sound card. Any suggestion?

More generally, is anyone using voice recognition software on their 600, and if so, what are they using?

Thanks

1. http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/M/MMX.html And yes you have it.
2. You have double the required cache so your fine.
3. You already have a soundcard built into the 600 as well as a mic (I believe)

Can't answer the usage question so I will leave that one to someone who has.

Only thing I'd do before getting ViaVoice installed is to go out and buy a nice microphone from a reputable company. The microphones built into ThinkPad's, or any laptop for that matter, stink like yesterdays casserole. The reason that would be a problem is that in voice recognition, it does help to have a good microphone, it sure does beat having to yell into the computer.

If you go to the Microsoft site....and download (MsiEngine TTS)...if your on good terms with them....lol..your little Laptop will repeat all you say...and you can correct it..lol
Push it, Pull it, Roll it into a ball, Flatten it out, Shoot it into the sky, Lay it on the ground, Open it up, Move it around, Find it, Be it, Learn it, Do it........But wat ever you do don't leave it alone!
