a different problem with my dvd drive...recognized as cd rom

#1 Post by erin » Wed Jun 16, 2004 6:09 pm

sorry to post again (but this is kind of a different issue). I thought my dvd drivers were installed but on further inspection something is wierd...my dvd drive is listed as cd rom under my computer...see below...

I've put some pics on my webspace to show you the prob:

'My Computer' View:
http://home.comcast.net/~pixidust83/dvdstuff.jpg

system properties (366 PII)
http://home.comcast.net/~pixidust83/systeminfo.jpg

hardware info:
http://home.comcast.net/~pixidust83/dvdmore.jpg

it says that my dvd is recognized (it's the highlighted Toshiba one...but as you can see
in the first pic link, it recognizes the dvdrom in 'my computer' as cdrom

-the dvd is still accessable by using right click > open > (I can see vob files etc)
-powerdvd 5 plays choppy dvds (it's only software that will recognize the dvd in the drive)
-windows media player 9, windvd trial version and dvdexpress (thinkpad version) do not recognize it as a dvd drive and do not recognize dvds in the drive....windows media actually sees the drive as a cdrom and says 'no disc in drive'..

I can't find any drivers online and i tried reinstalling / updating drivers...didn't seem to do anything.

Any suggestions. Thanks again.

I had the 366MHz 600E with DVD drive and it would play most DVDs just fine with W2K. You need the most updated audio and video drivers, a clean install and minimal TSR and active prgrams running in the background. Alternatively, you can use a Margi DVD-to-Go hardware acellerator which also works fine under W2k ($10-20 on ebay, drivers/software on the Margi.com site). Not sure why some software players aren't recognizing the drive (?)

I decided to purchase the margi card on ebay, so it's being shipped now...mainly because it was less expensive and ppl seem to have more positive results with it. Does it fit in the PC card slot on the side of the laptop?

Yep, pop it in the side PCMCIA slot sans dongle and install the Margi driver/decoder/player. Let us know how it works out!
