Hi, you NEED the HDD Caddy , they are different for nearly all laptop's. Go on E-Bay and you'll find what you need. Look in " Computers & Networking" then locate "LapTop Part's and Acc," .
Hope this is what your refering to. jimmyd

All 770 series caddys are the same.

Thanks James... THat looks just like the caddy from my 600E

In the case of the 600 E the drive plugs direct to the computer, there is no "plug" in the caddy, the caddy is a shell that surrounds the drive and centers it in the opening so the plug lines up properly... Even the screw that secures the drive does not go into the shell, it goes through it into a screw hole in the drive.

In short, it's just a wrapper Nothing more. Foil wrepped paper products would work as well

????? IOW, HUH?

They're nothing alike. The IDE connector for the 770 is on the SIDE, besides the fact that the shell completely encloses the HD.

ok, ran out of patience, this is getting... annoyng to say the least (not to mention this old cdrom is not going to last much longer, under the circumstances) :(

as james said, the 770 series caddy is unlike all (if i am not mistaking) other thinkpads caddys. it has the plug on the long side of the hdd, the plug that goes on the motherboard, that is. it is also a special plug, not a standard eide one, so what i am really missing is the adapter, without which i cannot connect my hdd, making a caddy out of something would not be a problem, ofcourse. i also managed to get a hdd, a travelstar even, really nice, with the caddy, but a caddy that has no plug (it's just an "enclosure" to put it this way), and that will fit most newer models (so if anyone needs that, or, even better, can swap with me the caddy i need and this one, i would be glad to )

so, any help would be apreciated, anyone, any idea? maybe someone has this spare part leying around? to put it shortlly HELP

note: no, i will not trade my good old 770 for another/newer model, nor will i throw it out the window, i love the [censored] thing old and beaten up as it is :)

I think Jimmy's and Greg's suggestion above to check out eBay is a good idea. If there is some reason you cannot or don't want to use eBay, then you could contact a local IBM dealer or IBM online. My experience, however, is that the cost of the 770 series hard drive caddy (which is what you are looking for) is pretty expensive ($50-$75 USD) anywhere you go except eBay. And on eBay I've seen them go for $20-$40 USD, which I think is still pretty high. I've never seen anyone DIY one of these caddies.

Phil.

Any progress??

Well pinout is here:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... 70tref.pdf

And i think that ultrabay connector can be used.

Too bad i don't have time myself, but it would be great to see someone diy it.
