For IBM 600X (500Mhz) without a DVD Drive:
a) Can external USB-DVD be used to watch DVD movies.
b) Can 10/100 network be used to watch DVD movies.

I can't speak to your processor power, but you will need USB 2.0 to watch DVD movies.

USB 2.0 isn't a problem, just pop in a PCMCIA card, new around $40 or less. I have a CD/DVD RW combo USB drive. I've burned CDs using USB 1 (not an entire CD at a time, but a few files isn't to slow) but haven't tried watching movies. I usually use a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card which I keep in the laptop most of the time.

Any 600X, even the PIII 450MHz units, is more than fast enough to watch a movie. Get an internal DVD/CD drive off eBay for the UltraSlim Bay.

I recommend you buy a PCMCIA USB2.0 card, a USB2.0-IDE cable and a desktop DVD-RW.

If you want portability, a compatible bay drive off ebay should cost less than getting a usb 2 PC card plus the external drive.

But, if external is the way you want to go, PM me, I got the card and external drive for my 560x, don't need now with T22, was planning to ebay. I'll give you a good price.

I keep hearing how you need USB 2.0 to watch video on a laptop.

I know, from expierence, that's ferterlizer 1.1 does the job just fine both with MPEG and with DVDs My setup is a Thinkpad 600E (366Mhz, a bit too slow) and originally a BACKPACK DVD/CD drive (Burner as well as player) Drive itself is an NEC. Current setup is an internal ultrabay slim drive from LIte-On (Mentioned in another post here in this forum in fact many thanks to the poster)

I do have issues watching DVD's on the laptop... Sometimes the audio starts "looping". However the issues are identical no matter if I'm using USB 1.1, USB 2.0 (A Compaq card) or the ultra-slim-bay (Which appears the same as internal) Drive The computer is simply not fast enough

To my left as I type this is a slightly faster computer (500Mhz) usb 1.1, it's playing MPEG files as I type Excelent video and no stuttering (it may be something else with the 600E, I am open to ideas here) but 1.1 or 2.0 makes no difference... My "Big" (1.8GHz Win-xp) box also has both 1.1 and 2.0 ports, and on that machine I have my choice of the very same Backpack USB drive, or an internal drive. I can plug the Backpack in usb 1.1 or 2.0 I've watched DVD's including some that gave me serious problems in all 3 configurations,,,, Internal, External USB 1.1, external USB 2.0 No detectable difference, no stuttering, no issues of any kind

Now.. that said, USB 2.0 does have its advantages when I'm hauling data back and forth (Example, backing up the laptop) A backup job that takes 4 hours on 1.1 can complete in 2 on 2.0 (Could go faster if the computer could process data faster) note this is backing up to a hard drive not the DVD, that takes much longer (Burn time) USB 1.1 can move video at about 2x the watching speed
