Is the 2X DVD drive adequate for playing most movies?

Actually DVD movies play at less than "1X speed," so greater speed players are only helpful in fast forward and when "ripping" from a DVD (copying all or parts of it to your hard drive) or when data is on a DVD and you're restoring it. For general movie playing 1X, 2X, 16X doesn't make any difference.

Certainly. All movies play at 1X!

The higher speeds (2X, 4X, etc.) are for data transfer use only.

Same with music CDs which also only play at 1X, although a CD's 1X is slower than a DVD's 1X, i.e. they play at different speeds.

James

Jim,
Yes, 1X speed would be the speed at which a movie plays but maybe there are different calibrations. When you "burn" a DVD, the 1X speed means it takes an hour (60minutes) to burn a full disc, 2X will burn at 30 mins. and 4X at 15mins, etc. So, if we take the speed to burn and transfer this logic to actual play back time, we know that most if not all movies are over 1 hour (60 minutes) long, which means that the disc actually spins at less than 1X speed (if calibration is the same as burn speed) to play that movie. I hope this make sense. That's why I said that movies actually play at LESS THAN 1x speed.
