380Z - 174 message, won't boot up!

#1 Post by alphabet » Sat Apr 30, 2005 2:39 pm

Hi All,

I hope you can help - I have an old IBM 380Z which hasn't been fired up for about a year. It was working perfectly well previously. When I start it up, it goes to a large error page - asks me to either test or restart. Restarting results in a black screen with 174 = OK(in a circle with a cross through it) = IBM. Very upsetting. When I 'tested', everything came up as 'OK', except HDD (don't know what that is) and DVD (there is no DVD anyway).

I am not technical at all, so I have no idea what all the indignant beeping is all about or what '174' even means. And yes, I am a girl. I would be grateful for any advice you can give - I probably need to take it to someone, don't I?

Thank you!

Alexandra :(

HDD stands for hard disk drive. Your hard drive is causing the error. With the computer off and the battery removed, try removing the hard drive, making sure no pins are bent and the connector hass no dust or junk blocking it up. After that, re-insert the hard drive firmly and make sure it's secure.
