390E maximum memory/ newest bios?

Hi!
I have Thinkpad 390E, just put in it 256MB 133MHz (!) memory module, it boots but detects only half of it (still better than my 600e that hangs on BIOS with 256MB or didn't even boot). I can't find the newest bios for 390E, is this for 390 without "E" applicable?

I have R01_C9 bios, for 390 (and some iSeries... well, was 390 manufactured by acer too?!) the newest is r01-g8, so seems a bit different nummeration.

CPU is P2 Dixon 333Mhz @ FSB 66MHz, and memory is also working on 66MHz bus... sadly CPU-Z can't read memory SPD on this machine.

Detecting only half the memory that's actually on the module usually means you have installed a "high density" module, when these older Thinkpads require "low density". As I mentioned in the 600E thread that you also posted in, 256MB modules need to have 16 memory chips on them. If yours has only 8, then they are high density and they will not work in the 390E (and most other systems from this age).

The latest (?) BIOS can be found here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... D=DS003576

It says the version is R01_c9 so you have the latest.

Yes, mine has only 8 chips. Thank's for tip.
I'll look on local electronics market, they often have such old ram sticks for cheap - maybe I'll get something working :)
