600e and 600x mobo swap

#1 Post by DaKKS » Tue Jul 23, 2013 10:03 am

Simple question, does a 600x motherboard fit into a 600e shell? I found a cheap 600e in god nick locally and wanted to use it to repair the 600x from the workshop. But its too far gone so i'm thinking a mobo cpu ram and hdd swap.

I haven't tried this myself, but I recall reading somewhere on the forum that you can't do a simple swap. I think that the motherboard alone might line up with most of the shell, but there are other issues that arise with the modem, video card, PCI module, or something.

(After a google search on this forum): Here is a link to a thread where moderator rkawakami and user hjhanzen exchange info on swapping a bottom shell of a 600 out for a 600X (not exactly the same as what you are doing, but similar in some ways):
Can you swap bases between 600 and 600x?

Not sure which CPU you intend on using, but while the CPU MMC-2 modules are physically swappable, they require slightly more fiddling than a straight swap. And you could not install the 600E CPU (a PII) into the 600X: you could only go the other way (upgrade the 600E to a PIII). RAM from your 600X should work in a 600E motherboard, but not vice versa (the 600X requires PC100 RAM and the 600E has PC66 RAM). HDD should swap no problem whichever direction you go.
