Does the IBM ThinkPad 365XD have a recovery partition?

Does the IBM ThinkPad 365XD have a recovery partition?

#1 Post by Mishi » Sat Oct 26, 2013 9:14 pm

Hi there. I know it's a long shot as I have been searching for an hour and a half, but does the 365XD have a recovery partition or are these computers too old for it? If they do have one, how does one access it?

I purchased mine the other day from a guy on usedvictoria.com and it currently has Windows 2000 on it. But, I think I could get it to run better if I downgraded it back to Windows 95, which is what it originally had, if the sticky on the bottom is to be believed. (OK in actuality I am going to try to put MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11 on this thing and call it the DOSmonster, but failing that I want to know if this thing has a recovery partition, how to access it, etc. I understand that when the computer was upgraded to 2000 the recovery partition may have been overwritten as I managed to do that with my HP Netbook when I changed the OS.)

The computer runs great, I am happy with it, I just DO NOT want Windows 2000 on this machine. It may or may not be a personal issue stemming from using Windows 2000 on a machine that was too old for it in the past...

I don't believe that your 365XD ever had a recovery partition..

its been a while but those predate the 760 series and THOSE had no recovery partition..

you might find someone around the forum here that has a recovery CD set..

welcome to the forum..

Thanks :) I will see if I can get my hands on the recovery disks for it then. Back to google, and if that doesn't help me I'll return here.

This machine is OLD. It doesn't even boot from CD. I bought it knowing this would be a challenge, but it's proving to be more than I bargained for. Especially when I found out that both sets of MS-DOS floppies I own have become corrupted. That's easy enough to work around though as I have another source for DOS floppies, and if I can't get DOS or the recovery disks for the 365XD I have someone who may have a working set of Windows 95 install disks. People call me crazy for my love of vintage computers but they sure last a lot longer than modern ones. I like things that don't crash if you sneeze on them.

I don't remember any computer having a recovery partition that far back (1996). Hard drive space was at a premium.

You're right that it won't boot from a CD.

It will, however, boot from the PCMCIA port, so if you get a PCMCIA Compact Flash card adapter (usually a dollar or two on eBay) and a CF card, you can boot from there, and install to the hard drive. Windows 3.1 flies on the 365XD, and 95 is tolerable. I run slackware 11 on mine from a CF card (I pulled the hard drive). Without the hard drive, the machine is lighter and absolutely silent.

Have fun!

They don't have recovery partitions.

I have WIN98 on my TP365X (no CD drive) and with 72MB of RAM it seems to run fine. My 365X came with WIN95.
