Thinkpad 600 - Dual Boot, Boot to XP disables Sound in DOS

#1 Post by UDX » Sat Nov 23, 2013 2:48 pm

I don't know if this has been answered before but here's what happens.

I use Dual Boot Win98 SE and XP SP3 on THinkpad 600.

I boot to XP and then simply go back to Windows 98.

During boot to Win98 a message is displayed saying Incorrect firmware revision to download code for sound card. Then boot to 98 finishes and Win 98 is fine. All would be good but occasionally I would like to go to DOS and play an old DOS game.

Anyways the workarround is to go to bios and "initialize" the thinkpad.

Then the sound works in DOS with normal IRQ DMA etc allocated to sound card.

If there is a way for me to boot to 98 and watch dvd's with closed captioning using my MARGI DVD to GO I wouldn't have to boot to XP.

Otherwise can this be resolved where I don't have to "initialize thinkpad" every time I boot to XP

Have you considered hiding the DOS and Win98 partitions from XPs view? I had a problem with XP deleting the restore points on my triple boot XP - Vista - Win 7 desktop. Hiding the Vista and Win 7 partitions from XP solved my problem. I don't see why you could vary the procedure slightly and hide the DOS and WIN 98 partitions as well.

Here is a link that explains how to hide partitions in XP.......

Try any or all of these:

* in Windows 98, use VLC (videolan.org) to play your DVDs.
* instead of the normal XP sound drivers, try to install compatible Sound Blaster ones.
